Looks like KB4461522 for Office 2010 is incompatible with Windows XP. Likely not compiled for XP on the newer VS but only Vista+

This is good info especially for those of us who use emulators like pcem and want to test software which no one seems to do anymore.

🤣! The consumer acts as the QA analyst these days, it is horrific.

Yes and no. Since when you find a flaw and report it to Microsoft they don't do anything with it. I am thinking of Skype bricking XP or Posready systems, how long ago was that? 2015 it was.

That MSFN thread (which is huge by now) is a great resource. I check it like every few months.
The other day there was a SSD tool mentioned there. Here is a free warning from my own experience: Manual TRIM can cause extensive loss of user data. At least with Crucial SSDs and Windows Posready.

Is there a similar list of omitted KB updates for Windows 7 Pro on SSE1 CPUs? And do the Win7 updates incorrectly try to install on SSE1 CPUs causing errors, as it did with POS2009? Or is the updater smart enough to check for SSE1 first?

I'm in the slow process of setting up an ultimate dual Tualatin SCSI RAID testbed with 4 OSes in multi-boot. As there is a 4 primary partition limit, I was thinking of NT4/W2K/XP/Win7 or NT4/W2K/XP/W2k3. I previously tried this using logical drives in extended partitions for greater than 4 partitions, but the Win7 installation messed up itself and the boot loader. Rather than find a solution to this, my brain says just to use 4 OSes instead of 5. I suppose I could also drop NT4 and have W2k3 and Win7.

I installed tonight the November updates and I can report that all of them are working fine!
4466388: OK
4467689: OK
4470118: OK
4470198: OK
The internet explorer update always installs on any system regardless of the presence of SSE2 instructions set or no!
The system is very responsive - in fact i am playing Doom 3 right now b 😊

I plan to backup the entire hard drive - only 80 GB - to one of the larger ones and just keep using the system. I am using a software antivirus - Symantec endpoint protection - that is pretty good in my opinion; also I am using a router, the system is not connected directly to the internet. In the end I think the main weak point is between the chair and the monitor 🤣 ; the user should browse the web responsibly!

It's not a conspiracy, just different teams at MS using different compilers and/or compiler options.

I don't know what to believe anymore - I believe all of it, at the same time, I believe none of it. There is very little I can say with certaintiy that is based upon first-hand knowledge.

I find it interesting that the year the patent for SSE expires(you can now build your own Pentium IIIs,) latest patches now require SSE2.

So that's what the long line of people outside the TSMC fab was? People eager to build their own Pentium III?

Sarcasm? Companies wanting to build x86 chips is a thing: https://www.bit-tech.net/news/tech/cpus/nvidi … -for-x86-cpu/1/ but don't from lack of license, which Intel doesn't hand out. As patents expire, that restriction goes away, but is only valuable if the patent free instructions are current enough to still run things, Intel method to keep a lock on x86 is to regularly come out with new instruction sets, deprecating the old helps to that end as well. Microsoft does things in similar fashion with compelled deprecation of drivers for older Windows. On par with standard operating procedure. sse starting to be patent free is a meaty one compared to mmx before it. Past eight years performance improvement has crawled while patents keep expiring so it's heading to a convergence point with anyone able to make current enough and fast enough x86 chips on their own that will run most everything, like say xyz companies in china, new and deprecated instruction sets keeps ahead of that.

ps. Here are games that are blocked by denuvo DRM from running on older systems from requiring SSE 4.1/4.2.

and along the same lines, pin testing shows how intel new socket not necessary, except force upgrading/spending money.

You got a point.

Building just a Pentium III would be pretty useless, but if one could build a fast x86, without the "patented" instructions, that can still compete with Intel's latest offerings, it could be a thing.

Still, I believe you must be wrong somewhere, because if someone could build such a competitor, without the patented instructions, but software would not run on it because of same instructions, a very strong case of vendor lock-in could be made and the anti-trust bodies would make minced meat out of... someone. Why isn't it happening?

>without the patented instructions, but software would not run on it because of same instructions

That's not the situation, newer software is requiring newer still patented instruction sets. sse4.2 are sse instructions but are different from sse 1.0, and still patented.

I just installed February updates for XP/POS2009 on my Intel Core2 Duo laptop and an AMD AM2 system. After doing so, Windows Media Player 11 would not open (crash debug error) and Windows Explorer would no longer display thumbnail photos of jpegs. I traced the the problematic update down to KB4487085. https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/4487085/ I am not really sure what this update is for, but removing it solved both problems.

Looks like Microsoft acknowledged a problem with the original KB4487085 and fixed it. The fixed version doesn't have the issues described in my prior post.

Just noticed they issued a replacement KB4487085 on the 15th. After installation I found that the problems I was having (sprintf_s procedure entry point could not be found (or something like that)) have now gone and everything is running as it should.

Which comes as a great relief because one of the programs affected was the bloody anti-virus (Panda). Its very disconcerting when your AV GUI goes AWOL even through the service itself is running.
