Update:
I have done a bit of work improving how several identical devices can be playing in parallel, hooked to different ports, each playing a share of notes, having polyphony and multitimbrality increased proportionally. To be clear, it was there for a while, but since it is not typical to have several identical synths, it was a quirk of a feature.
And then it dawned on me - you don't have to have N physical devices to record. You could just plug the same device to port 1, 2, 3, 4 in turn, and record the same track 4 times, and then you mix the recorded tracks down.
And then it dawned on me again and I added support to switching the device's share at runtime. Therefore you simply start recording, and the playlist keeps playing the same track in the loop and every time it plays the next time the share is switched. This way the device is always plugged to the same port and you are not even limited with the number of physical output ports.
And so, returning to Roland GR-09

It is a guitar synth, and has a lot of really nice sounds, BUT is monotimbral i.e. can only play one instrument at a time.
Not much of gaming can be done on that (even though the tunes remain recognizable)
And it is still true, not much gaming could be done in real-time (unless you have 16 of them), but it does not mean I couldn't record it playing.
And so, lo and behold - a monotimbral guitar synth Roland GR-09 playing DOS games music:
