I am having a strange issue with DOSBox 0.71 in Windows Vista. I have the cpu cycles set to "auto", and when I play a game like Doom 2 or Dark Forces (DOS4GW), it will run extremely slowly at times but perfectly smoothly at others. I've noticed that in particular, when I trigger certain sound effects (by picking up ammo/health items), that the game will slow down horrifically until the sound is completed playing.

Also, with other games like C&C: Red Alert, it plays perfectly smoothly and fast in windowed mode, but it slows down tremendously in full screen mode. I'm using the default video settings (normal2x scaling.)

My machine is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 DualCore 4000+, with 2 GB of RAM and a 128 MB ATI Radeon X1300.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as I'm really scratching my head on this one. Most of these games ran a bit slowly but playable on my previous Windows XP P4 1.8 GHz box. This computer seems like it is has the potential to be much faster, but something strange is causing it to behave erratically.

Thanks in advance!

Hmm - guessing wildly here... Tried with cycles=max? Or some fixed value? Tried different sound settings? Tried disabling (in the config) unused sound emulators?
