So I downloaded one of my favorite classics, only to find out that they don't work! Dosbox crashes on startup. Opens 3 windows, then boom, 'dosbox.exe has stopped working'. I tried the solution posted in this thread: Id and Valve Superpack Dosbox config fix

That worked, but if I tried to restart the game, it crashed again, and I have to redownload the game to get it to work again, which is really pointless.

Sooo... what do I do? I'm a complete newb to dosbox so I'm running blind here.

My specs, if necessary:
Asus P5N32-E SLI (not the plus version)|Core 2 Duo E6600|Corsair XMS2PRO DDR2-800 5-5-5-15|GeForce 8800GTX|Audigy 2 ZS|Vista Home Premium x86

Any help's appreciated, for now, I'll just listen to my soundtracks of said broken games. 😁

I think I remember seeing a guide on the Steam Powered forums for converting the Steam games over to their respective ports.

You need to download the doomsday engine and then copy the heretic/hexen data files over to that.

You could try looking in the .conf included. Theres more than one and I believe it uses hexen.conf for it's configuration. Just take a look in there disable things like changing "normal2x" to "none" or changing the resolution from "original" to something else like your native resolution.

Also try clicking on dosbox.exe (located in steamapps\common\hexen) and use "disable desktop composition" on it's shortcut properties. I find Aero really isn't a fan of DOSBox and this helps.

Also if that still doesn't work, then try this - right click on 'Computer' and go to properties. Then click on "advanced system settings" and then the advanced tab, then "Settings" under the performance section. Now go to the "Data Execution Prevention" tab and choose the second option.

Now click "add" and browse to dosbox.exe (again, under steamapps\common\hexen) and it will disable DEP for that game. DEP causes all sorts of weird things to happen in Vista. To disable it entirely (fixing games like FEAR combat) use this:
