While I run MS-Dos applications directly under Windows XP along with Windows applications, malware is able to make an end-run around Panda, insert itself into files, and turn off Panda. Will DosBox prevent this happening?

Are you saying that when you run DOS games in Windows XP that it somehow prevents Panda Antivirus from protection your system? Antivirus software shouldn't care about what is being run and DOS games shouldn't interfere.

As for DOSBOX, game run in DOSBox are isolated from the computer they are run on because they are run in emulation. The only part of the system that DOSBox affects is the folder that you mount in DOSBox itself.

Finally, as far as AV software protecting your system in most cases they cannot do much so your better off not have Administrator rights, not downloading/installing/clicking on stupid things, and not running an insecure browser. The best preventative measure is to not get the virus/malware/spyware on your system in the first place.

As DosFreak wrote - unless someone made an error in the programming of DOSBox, or a virus is really REALLY clever and know how to make DOSBox mount stuff, then "whatever happens in DOSBox, stays in DOSBox" (and the drives you mount yourself).
