hello, I have a bad problem with Al Unser Jr. Arcade Racing. It is absolutly impossible to install it on the PC.

Windows 7 is not even able to install it, so do Vista, XP , 98 and even windows 95 on a VM

on Win 3.11 (with dosbox), the game install but when I try to run the game i get the message

''Unexpected DOS Error: 21''

I honestly don't know how I can fix or even play the game

Primal Rage cannot be installed, I am simply not able. On the compatibility page, they say to simply run the game from the CD. The Game Run but I cannot get any sound or music to play

Thanks in advance

Does the racing game use win32s? If so, the "Unexpected DOS Error: 21" has been avoided in other games with cputype=486_slow.

Is there any kind of sound setup, internal or external, in Primal Rage, or does it appear it is autodetected?

About Al Unser Jr. Arcade Racing

I tried cpu slow, and the game tell me another error (you must run the game at 256 Colors) even thought i had 64k color mode. I switched my win 3.11 to 256 colors and now the game run!. But here another problem. I cannot hear any music, despite using the physical CD or a Cue Bin

About Primal Rage

When I go on the sound setup, the sound and music test pass but then the setup tell me ''error on saving setup!''

For the racing game, what kind of sound and music do you expect to hear? Does the CD have audio tracks? Do you have SB / MIDI drivers installed in Win3 that are working with other games?

The Primal Rage CD image I have definitely needs to be installed, and installed fine for me with default settings in DOSBox 0.74. I just ran INSTALL.EXE and chose full installation to default C:\RAGE directory, then set up GM music and SB16 sound; and the game appears to run fine once installed. Also applied the patch for the game; no problem there.

For Al Unser Jr.

I expect music like in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmKbrB8rdKc (It is a music sample of the game)

The Music work with Chessmaster Turbo 4000 , so I think yes Ive isntalled the SB Midi sound thing

in Win 3.11 I have to choice between CD Audio, Aldib or Midi for Arcade Racing

Here the cue. file of Al Unser Arcade Racing

FILE "AL_UNSER_JR.bin" BINARY
TRACK 01 MODE1/2352
INDEX 01 00:00:00
TRACK 02 AUDIO
INDEX 01 03:02:44
TRACK 03 AUDIO
INDEX 01 10:18:61
TRACK 04 AUDIO
INDEX 01 17:18:15
TRACK 05 AUDIO
INDEX 01 24:28:57
TRACK 06 AUDIO
INDEX 01 27:35:50
TRACK 07 AUDIO

For Primal Rage

I tried installing it again with defaults option and while primal rage seems to be installing files. The other dosbox window say

SHELL: Redirect output to NUL

The actual installer say the installation is complete, and when I want to go to configure sound, it take me back to the installer screen

So the actual game do not install at all. I don't know how it work for you but not for me even with defaults option

Try playing the CD audio tracks outside the racing game, preferably with some player app for Win3.

The Primal Rage installer runs COPY commands through the shell and redirects output of them to NUL; that's why you see those shell messages in the console, so that is actually a good sign. What is in the C:\RAGE directory after installation?

For Arcade Racing

I can listen the music with quicktime for windows, but not in game. Is there a solution for that? or is there a way to run it on a vm windows 95 withouth crash?

For Primal Rage

I get a single 1 Ko Configuration file called RAGE after Full or small Installation

If you can play the audio tracks in Win3 but they don't work in the game, either the game needs to be told to play the tracks or there's some issue with how it tries to play them versus how other programs do.

It's indeed strange that you're running into this problem with the Primal Rage installer. It's as if the COPY commands are failing to do anything. You might try copying COMMAND.COM from DOSBox's Z: drive to the emulated root directory of the C: drive you have mounted in DOSBox, maybe it looks for it there, but the version I have finds it on the Z: drive with the COMSPEC environment variable just fine. Another thing you can do is run the install with a debug build of DOSBox and capture a debug log of an installation run and post a zip of that here. You should see debug messages like:

EXEC:Parsing command line: copy rage.snd\ADLIB.MDI C:\RAGE > NUL:

I installed the racing game in DOSBox 0.74 in my WfW 3.11 installation, only cputype=486_slow is different from default settings because of the win32s issue. There is an icon in the game's program group called "Configure" that lets you choose cdaudio, adlib, or MIDI sound. All of those seem to be working fine in the game; but note that I had to go into Control Panel, Drivers, and Add the "[MCI] CD Audio" driver to get cdaudio to work, because it's not automatically installed by the Windows installer.

The alternate location for COMMAND.COM is just something to try; I don't think it's likely to help. The debug log may be helpful in figuring out what's wrong, though.

I do not see the ''MCI CD AUDIO Driver'' in the driver list, it is a file i need to download or it is here by default and im simply blind?

Ive found it, but now I have to find my old windows CD to be able to install the driver

EDIT 2: You saved me with al unser jr. arcade racing on win3.11, the music finnaly work and so the game. Thanks

Now for primal rage, I will try your trick tommorow

Strange. "Al Unser Jr. Racing" is installing and running perfectly from the box. The only trouble - GUS WfV3.11 driver don't work with the game. But SB16 driver is working perfectly.

"Primal Rage" - again, has installed perfectly. Vanilla DOSBox 0.74, even without DOS external commands... Full and small had been tested, with and without sound configuration from the setup program...
But the game itself is not running. "Illegal read from..." and "Illegal write from..." 🙁
Bu the way, did you use -freesize 500 parameter for the C mounting? DOSBox is working strange for the 512+ Mb volumes.

Al Unser Jr. Racing Is working, there is no more problem

If possible, a mod should remove ''al unser jr. arcade racing (win. 3.11 Win95) and just leave Primal Rage DOS

But Primal rage wont work even with the freesize 500 parameter thing. Moving the command.com didn't worked either. I have the original Game in a Big Box with its CD

NOTE: I can run Primal Rage if I copy the SB16Rage folder on the hard drive, thought music and sound will not work, the game will run. I want to enable music and sound

What commands are you using to mount the Primal Rage CD-ROM in DOSBox?

the classics, like all my DOS CD Games

Z: mount c c:\test

Z: C:

C: imgmount d c:\rage.cue -fs iso -t iso
mdsex or whatever is installed

C: D:

D: Install

My possible guess is that I named the image RAGE instead of PRAGE, like the exe

The CD volume label is stored internally, independently of the file name of the BIN/CUE image, so unless you did something weird when you made the image, that would not be an issue.

I dimly recall (thanks to threads like this) that you have to run the game with the "-f" parameter in some cases.

The copy commands used by the installer appear to be executing based on the redirection status messages, but they fail for some reason (DOSBox might be reporting an error, but it's being redirected to NUL). Just a hunch, but could you do a DIR command in DOSBox on the mounted disc's root directory and post a screenshot or text of what it lists?

Ok, I found the source of the "illegal write/read" errors. Default "16 Mb" version is broken. "4 Mb" and "8 Mb" versions are working perfectly.
Sound and music are ok (sound/music tests in "game options" were used).

Jorpho, thanks alot for the threads, this SOLVED MY PROBLEM. I used my vmware windows xp to install the game, and I was able to get all the necessary files and then transfer them back to my main computer. The sound and music work too. All my problem are solved for both games!

Al Unser Jr. Arcade Racing: Installing MCI CD Audio Driver, installing Win 32 and switching the system setting to 800 x 600 256 colors was the solution

Primal Rage: Installing the game in a VM of Windows XP or before was the key to sucess to get all the file it was supposed to install.

Thanks alot

Al Unser Jr. Arcade Racing also needs cputype=486_slow.

I am running the 16MB version of Primal Rage version 1.1A in DOSBox 0.74 with default settings. Not seeing any memory errors.
