So I work at a PC shop/PC recycling company. One of the little side benefits is that I can rescue the occasional machine and part if I can find suitable replacement junk to kick back for weight. Earlier this week, I rescued a Gateway GP6-400 with TNT video card, 128mb ram (hard drive is garbage, but it boots). Yesterday I found a Gateway G6-400 with Voodoo Banshee card. In addition I scored a 450mhz CPU from our teardown room and the boss placed a 500GB IDE drive on my desk to go with them.

Between the two, I have enough parts to build a nice machine with replacement parts if something fails.

I'm thinking another Windows 98 machine. Some networked games with my existing AMD550 could be fun.
(Should I dual boot another OS?)

Anyone have any idea of what the difference between the GP6-400 and G6-400 is?

Did a complete tear down and clean up on GP6 unit, then put the nicer looking G6 front-plate on it. Loaded with Windows 98SE, it's running 137GB of a 500GB western digital drive, the Voodoo Banshee card, and a Vibra16 until I can obtain another AWE32/AWE64 card.

Strangely it seems much faster than my Athlon 550. Is this possible? I even had to patch the JAZZ CD to get it to run.
Was the Pentium II just a better performer than the AMD at that time?

The Athlon was a match for the Coppermine Pentium 3. It was back in the Pentium 2 vs K6-2 days that Intel ran laps around AMD in FPU performance.

My 1st PC (as in MINE not the family's) was a GP6-400 with 16Mb TNT! Also had a 10GB Quantum HDD, 32x CD-ROM and 64MB Ram.
Still got it but donated the front cover to a company as theirs was broken and I could live with no cover, they couldn't round 2006.
Case was good solid design accept the corner of the Motherboard got in the way of the drive bays if you wanted more then 1 CD drive.
The Motherboard is the legendary Intel SE440BX-3, Most likely with an Ensonic/Creative PCI 64 on board which can emulate a SB Pro in dos and unlike dell uses the standard ATX power connector
