Good Low profile card with windowsXP support?

Postby SETBLASTER » 2019-5-13 @ 01:47

i have a machine that is Small form factor and i want to put in it a Low profile PCI-express videocard.

#1 The card needs to be low profile
#2 the card should not use external power cable.
#3 the card should have windows XP drivers.

is there a low profile videocard that has XP drivers and is comparable in performace to a 8800GT videocard?

please let me know your thoughts.

You have a lot more options if you drop the low profile requirement. The GT 740 or 730 are the best you can do. According to the UserBase benchmarks, the GT 730 is roughly 30% faster than a 8800gt, with a GT 740 being about twice as fast. For AMD, the 6450 is about the same speed as an 8800gt.

If you take away the low profile requirement, the GTX 750 is rather fast and requires no external power. There are rare models of GTX 750ti and HD 5770 (and similar) GPUs from AMD that are rather fast and did exist in low profile variants, albeit with external power.

For period correctness, you would be look at a 9500gt or HD 4670, both of which are significantly slower than the 8800gt.

There are certainly low-profile GTX 750TIs with no external power cables - I have a NIB one of these kicking about somewhere

theres even gtx950 low profile but its very rare, so low profile 750ti would be the way to go

Neat! Galax and Saphire did make some really interesting low profile cards. If the OP can find one for a good price that would definitely be the most ideal.

I have a Radeon HD7750 in low profile that doesn't use an extra power connector - I think the TDP is 55W. I'm not sure of an exact comparison with the 8800GTX but I think it's pretty close. I run it under XP in an HP/Compaq SFF Desktop with Ivy Bridge i3. I think a 750TI would be faster though.

GTX Titan is low profile, right?
Retro PC Intel i7 2600, 16GB, AMD FirePro V5800 1GB, SSD + HD, XP/7
Main Desktop Intel 6700, 32GB, AMD RX580 8GB, NVMe SSD + HD, 10

Well it isn't a great card no. It is slower in many synthetic benchmarks by a lot. You will be hard pressed to find a proper review of the 6450 with something equivalent to an 8800gt on the same axis.

Based on user benches on GPU boss, it performs at most 10% better than an 8800gt at 1080p on League of Legends, CS GO, and GTA V, for what that it is worth. Honestly I have no idea how most of these low end cards will perform in XP era games. They aren't benchmarks or reviewed very often.

I found this lineup, it might be helpful:
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/g ... 00-gt.c635

A lot of cards faster than a 9800gt existed in low profile, but the issue isn't whether or not they existed, but whether or not you can find one, and if it is worth the money.

My recommendation is a GTX 750 ti. It is well reviewed and very fast. There are some up for auction around the 100$ range, and it will perform the best by far.

Of course, a GTS 250 is literally a supper charged 8800gt and you can find them easily for 20$. An HD 4850 has identical performance to a GTS 250 is also period appropriate. 20$. I know you are committed to a low profile unpowered build, but it does really limit your options.

There are several low-profile Millennium G550s out there! Just make sure to get a breakout cable for the HD 60-pin connector.

Radeon 6450 is nowhere close to an 8800GT. However, Radeon 5570 or 6570 are at least somewhat close and those exist as low-profile cards.

Low profile, single slot, passively cooled, takes all power from the slot.

it's the same GPU as the GTX 960, so I expect that it would be easy to get it working just as well, and it fits both low profile, no connector, and it's pretty fast, a good amount faster than the 750 Ti

but... it's probably not that easy to find.
