Update 7-11-2007

Updated 2003 list.
Started going back through and fixing the non-working games. Alot of games had "memory could not be read errors" on execution. Most of these games wanted DirectMusic, when I used the DirectMusic files from XP these games worked fine.

2003 testing is just about done and compatibility is pretty equal to 2000/XP.

Well I loaded up the latest Wine 0.9.41 on Ubuntu 7.0.4 and tested about 20+ games ranging from 1997-2004.

About 5 of them worked.....

Yeah.....So I'm definetly sticking with the Vmware plan for Linux testing of all games first.

Only using Wine for those games explicitly listed as working in the Wine Compatibility database.

Updated 9-23-2007

Updated 2000-XP compatibility lists.
Added more free/demo games to the list.
Did some testing of 16bit games in 64bit windows using Vmware/DosBox programs.
Got around to creating an XP 64bit image for this Dell D520 laptop so I've started XP 64bit testing. (Should help when I get around to fixing games missing DirectMusic in 2003 64bit).

For those interested in which OS is the most compatible (testing still not completed on all of the OS's so I've left them out):

XP (32bit):
1074 games just work
58 do not work

2000:
1068 games just work
61 do not work

2003 (32bit):
1001 games just work
78 do not work

Vista (32bit):
615 games just work
262 do not work

Updated 11-2-2007

Fixed some errors in the DosBox list.
More testing of Vista 32bit XDDM/WDDM and Vista 64bit.
Some testing of XP 32bit.

Noticed something odd with my ATI X800 in Vista.

Looks like in Vista using the XDDM (XP) drivers that games are not recognizing that my video card supports T&L, whereas with the WDDM (Vista) drivers these same games on the same computer work fine. This is with the latest ATI Catalyst drivers.....

Very strange. Guess using XP drivers on Vista are dropping support for some video card features (at least on some video cards). Only tested on ATI X800 so far.

Did some Vmware Server v1.04 testing.
Had alot of Vmware5/5.5/6 entries for games that run fine under Vmware Server so I retested those games and now almost all are listed under Vmware Server. A few are being stubborn so those will still be listed under VPC/Vmware5/6 for now.

I also have quite a few games tested under Qemu....trying to decide if I should switch all of the games over to Qemu or over to Vmware. (Original goal was to go with complete open-source solution.). I may say ****-** and just put them all under Vmware Server until Qemu support is better across all OS's. (By that I mean website/forum/OS support as good as vmware). I don't see that happening for quite awhile so Vmware Server it is. I love Qemu....but it sure isn't Vmware.

(VirtualBox bites for 9x support and VPC isn't cross-platform).

DosBox Win95 support is getting better so it's likely in a year most of these games will be running in DosBox anyway....sweet.

We got some Dell D630's at work last week with the 965 video chipset. (T&L support!) so I'm going to go back through 2000/XP/2003 and retest those games that require T&L and pixel shaders. Only way I was able to test those games before was on my old Athlon XP 2800+ but since I gave that to my brother for Christmas then that's no longer an option. What's nice is that I have Acronis images of all of these OS's, so now I no longer have to mess around with a Desktop computer and can use the D630 for the games that require better graphics card support. Obviously the 965 isn't that great of a video card but it's good enough to get the game to start and crawl through them at 5fps to see if the games work!

What else.....

Need to work more on XP/2003/Vista 64bit testing.
Need to test all of my games in Vmware Server to see which support DirectDraw (for DosBox Win95 testing)
Need to install NT4 on a D505 at work and setup an NT4 image for testing and also install Vmware 4 so I can install Win98/ME on NT4 so I can expand my NT4 list).
Need to finish working on my old computer at work. (98/NT4 dual-boot with Voodoo 3 card for D3D/Glide/OGL testing).

Yep, not much to do....

Worked on fixing games in 2000/XP/2003/Vista 32bit lists.
Worked on DosBox list, tested some more Windows games in DosBox.

Worked on NT4 SP6 slipstream and 98SE Unattended Boot CD (installs updates and drivers on install). So when I get around to those OS's on my list again I'll have fully patched OS's to play around with.

Was looking at the categories at the bottom of my list and was thinking a good idea to get rid of alot of them (Instead the categorly would be "Requires GCP" is to just create a "Game Compatibility Pack" for all OS's. (How to fix the game without the pack would still be in the comments) This pack would contain:

Glide Wrappers
Compatibility Updates (.sdb's for each OS).
Codec's
Misc fixes for games.

Would likely leave Emulators/Ports out of the pack since in most cases they are not necessary, would require too much work to keep track of and updated.

Hoping to get rid of all of the QEMU entries on my list and replace them with Vmware.

I currently have Vmware Workstation 5/6, Vmware Server, and Qemu on the list.

Previously I was replacing Qemu with Vmware Server but seeing the direction that Vmware server is going (no local GUI just a web interface...like the old ver of Virtual Server), I'm now going to replace ALL entries with Vmware Workstation 6.

So 98SE/NT4 they will use Vmware Workstation 4.5
2000, XP32 and 64bit, 2003 32 and 64bit, Vista 32 and 64bit, 2008 32 and 64bit will all use Vmware Workstation 6.
Linux will also use Vmware Workstation 6.

Again Virtual PC/Virtual server will not be used because they are not cross platform, not being developed and I just don't like them :)

The only issue with using Vmware Workstation (ignoring the fact that it's not GPL) is that you have to pay for it. Too bad people. Pay for it, it's worth it.

Also since all the games I test in Vmware Workstation use GDI/DirectDraw then they should work fine in VPC/Virtual Server.

Updated 5-5-2008

I've been going through all of the NT operating systems and testing the untested/non-working/games with problems. Haven't finished with 2003 32bit or 64bit yet. The plan once finished is to start working on the Game Compatibility Pack for Windows 2000 through Windows 2008.

The following is the latest stats from the list:

GAMES WITH NO PROBLEMS (Just install and play)

Windows XP (32bit)= 1,140 Games
Windows 2000 = 1122
Windows 2003 (32bit) = 1054
Windows 2003 (64bit) = 769
Windows Vista (32bit) = 674
Windows Vista (64bit) = 575

GAMES THAT DO NOT WORK

Windows Vista (64bit) = 235
Windows 2003 (64bit) = 202
Windows Vista (32bit) = 152
Windows 2000 = 55
Windows 2003 (32bit) = 54
Windows XP (32bit) = 53 Games

Haven't updated the list in awhile. Been deployed to White Sands Missle Range,NM for the past month so haven't had time to work on it.

I have been working on organizing the file structure for my games, aquiring more games (PITA having to go back through all the OS's when I get new games :) ), researching mods/utilities for games, testing out the 2000 to XP wrapper, etc etc. So when I get back to working on the list it should go along a bit more rapidly.

Hmmm.... Should I be worried when your status is listed as "Russian Mercenary"? :smug:
