I'm not sure what to do about the componentes stuffed in boxes, I don't want them under the desks. One idea I had is to buy kitchen cabinets - the kind you install on the wall, and install them on the walls above the desks.

If you are in Canada, I noticed they have garage wall cabinets on sale in the flyer this week, $149 CDN for a double wide. Not dirt cheap, but reasonable. Other place to try would be the Habitat for Humanity ReStores (Which occasionally also get in computer stuff)

If the shelving is still a problem, and you've got identical heavy duty units, you could use them as "ends" and bridge them with sturdy planks between them for a section of shelving between them. Only as wide as they are if it's heavier stuff, but could go 8ft even if it's light stuff like game boxes on it.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

My semi-retro setup with studio mixer, speakers and OLED display. It is compatible with my retro PCs for the 1993-2006 era, and also my home office with Macbooks.

Nice setup! What's the little black box with a blue led display on top of the PC?

I like it! I take a similar approach, minus the mixer (for now). I have three laptops (one for work, two for play) and four retro towers, but only one desk. This allows me to swap in each computer seamlessly, and I can also change up the peripherals where necessary (I have a few different keyboards/mice depending on what computer I'm using) and I find this works well.

I'm planning to add a headphone amp + DAC, and potentially a mixer (although I have enough cable spaghetti as it is).

I'd love to add a CRT monitor and have my retro rigs separated off from my modern computers, but I just don't have the space right now.

Bonus pic of my consoles.

Since no one answered you, it's an Open Source Scan Converter (OSSC). I used one for a bit to hook my Pentium 90 system up to my home theatre:

That computer is now back earning its keep as a monitor stand:

Benefits of living in the middle of the Pacific Ocean heh. Haha, yes indeed, especially at 1600x1200 😀. The easy solution to that is just play at night when the kids are in bed!

Nice and clean all around I see...

Well I'm more into reasonably priced and functional setup.
All 4 babies of mine managed to squeeze into pic.

Reminds me of the google servers. Just the M/B, HDD, etc on a shelf in a rack.

I might try something like that, triple threat milk crates, 486, few hundred mhz socket 7, gigahertz plus socket A or P4.

tolerate? You mean your flatmates are lucky to be sharing a roof with!
I'd offer a PC to each flatmate and then have a few LAN games 😉

PS, Your lego trains are cool as well
