I receive the following error when trying to run DOOM-IT in DOSBox

DOOM @RESPONSE
ILLEGAL COMMAND: DOOM

"The Depths of Doom Trilogy" box set contains:

Disc 1 - Doom 1 Ultimate Doom for Windows 95
Disc 2 - Doom 2
Disc 3 - Master Levels and Maximum Doom

Disc 1 - Contains the full retail version of Doom plus add on's and extra
episodes like "Thy Flesh Consumed"

Disc 2 - Contains the full retail version of Doom 2

Disc 3 - Contains 20 extra levels called "Doom Master Levels" (contained in
it's own folder) and "Doom Maximum Levels" (contained in it's own folder).

Doom Maximum levels have been created by third party developers\hobbyists
who have built more levels for Doom 1 & 2 which amount to 1,000 + in total
of different levels or (WADS), I don't think these levels have been endorsed by
the original developer ID Software.

Also in the the "Maximum" folder is a "Doom Launcher" called "DOOM-IT",
which when launched, after chosing the level (WAD) you want to play
provided in the DOOM IT launcher, overwrites the original levels of Doom 1
or Doom 2, whichever game you want to play.

I have installed both Doom 1 & 2 onto the same HDD, into the root of the
drive, sucessfully on my Windows XP Home based computer and they both play
OK with NO added patches or updates.

With the DOOM IT launcher I installed it onto the same HDD as the 2 games.
First, it asks where to install it and to create a new directory called
"Maximum".

There are various options on the DOOM-IT interface asking if you want a serial,
network game etc. Which this is a standalone computer so I don't bother with
those options. You then need to tell the DOOM-IT launcher where the Doom
games are installed, for my system it's D:\Doom 1 OR D:\Doom 2, the DOOM-IT
program can only handle filenames of a certain length. The default install
path, when installing either game is C:\Program Files\Doom 1 for Windows 95.
I've had problems in the past when installing either game to their default
path then finding DOOM-IT refuses to find the game. So I now install the
game to the root of the HDD.

You then need to tell the DOOM-IT program your
CDROM drive letter, for me it's F:. It's fine so far with the program. You
can then choose either game Doom 1 or 2, then a WAD, chose other settings,
difficulty, sound etc. You then press "Enter" and
behind the main DOOM-IT interface is a DOS box which says
DOOM @RESPONSE ILLEGAL COMMAND:DOOM

When this Trilogy Pack first came out in the days of 80Mb HDD's it was
suggested you don't install the WAD's onto your HDD as they would be far too
big in capacity to go on an average HDD. So you had to run the DOOM IT
launcher and WADS from the CD .

I have tried installing both Doom games, the DOOM-IT launcher and all the
"Maximum" WADS onto the same HDD but ending up with the same error message.

I have tried trawling the net and "Googling" DOOM-IT errors, Illegal Command
etc but with no satisfactory result to cure this error.

Windows XP SP2
MoBo: Intel Unbranded 1.7Ghz D845GERG2
NVidia GeForce4 MX440
Creative SB Live 1024 Value

80Gb HDD Volume Label C:\Windows XP
80Gb HDD Volume Label E:\BackUp
300Gb HDD Volume Label D:\XP Games

Hope you can help

Dave

Ehm... A lot of text, but not real information. The problem is probably that your launcher can't find the doom executable file.

But - does this have anything to do with DOSBox? Are you trying to run the launcher (and Doom) inside DOSBox?

Anyway, you may want to consider using one of the many Windows ports of Doom (Doom Legacy or Doomsday, for example). That should be much easier than trying to run a DOS game under XP, or setting up Doom and the launcher in DOSBox.

EDIT: damn, i just noticed that you are using DOSBox (top of the post). If you insist on using DOSBox, we need information on your drive mounts, and how you did install the game and the launcher. It will still be difficult to find the exact source of the problem without knowing what the launcher does exactly.

Sorry about the load of text, thought you might need as much info as poss. No I'm not trying, or wanting, for that matter, to run the Doom games in DOSBox as they run perfectly well in XP. And yes I have used DoomsDay launcher to play Doom, and yes DoomsDay is a good app. It's the DOOM-IT launcher itself I'm trying to get running in DOSBox so I can play the WADS for Doom that are contained in the DOOM-IT program. DOOM-IT refuses to run in XP as it is part of the Trilogy box set that came out in the 1990's when Win 95 and 98 were in use.
I thought also, as well as you that the DOOM-IT launcher couldn't find the Doom.exe file.
I run DOSBox and get the Z:\ prompt, from there as follows:
Bearing in mind both Doom 1 & 2 and the DOOM-IT launcher are on
D:\XP Games

Z:\mount d d:\
mount is sucessful

Z:\mount f f:\ -t cdrom
mount is sucessful

Z:\f:

F:\cd maximum

F:\<MAXIMUM>install

Then follow the instructions above from where it asks where to install it to.

Yes I am using v0.72.

I put in the following commands into DOSBox

mount c d:\
Drive C is mounted as local directory d:\

mount d f:\ -t cdrom
Drive D is mounted as CDRom f:\

When I had to tell the DOOM-IT launcher where Doom 1 was I told it it was on C:\ (as C:\ is mounted as D:\)

And when it needed to know the CDROM drive letter I told it it was D:\ (as D:\ is mounted as the F:\)

Because DOOM-IT has problems recognising filenames longer than 8.3, I told DOOM-IT it was C:\Ultima~1 and not (Ultimate Doom for Windows 95, which is the default installation path)

It still didn't work, same error message

Sorry don't know what you mean.

And I made a mistake. The default install path for Doom is C:\Program Files\Ultimate Doom for Windows 95

I change it to

D:\Ultimate Doom for Windows 95

And no, I dont believe there's an auto search facility in DOOM-IT cause you have to tell it where the Doom files reside

Wait wait wait wait....what the heck are you trying to do? Use DoomIT in dosbox and have it run Doom 95? That isn't going to happen. Whatever DoomIT runs will run within dosbox, so it must be the DOS Doom.

Surely those wads are located on the cd or something? Just take them off. Unless theres a zip or something you can extract.

However you will not be able to use it to run Doom 95. It doesn't work that way.

Yes, like I said at first, the WADS are on a CD along with the DOOM-IT program. I have tried copying the WADS and the DOOM-IT program from the CD onto the D:\ HDD and it all copies over OK. But the DOOM-IT program still does not work properly in DOSBox even when the WADS and DOOM-IT are on the HDD. And no, none of the WADS or DOOM-IT are compressed. And yes, I am trying to run DOOM-IT in DOSBox. After all, DOOM-IT is a launcher for it's WAD files for the new levels so the WADS within DOOM-IT overwrite the original Doom game WAD files with new ones from DOOM-IT. Doom and it's following episodes Doom 2 etc, DOOM-IT run in native DOS and I had them all working perfectly on a Windows 98SE machine. But now I have Windows XP it would be nice to play them all including the new WADS from DOOM-IT. Surely DOSBox can do this?

Well somewhere you got to specify the path to doom. Either you got that
wrong, or it can't access the executable there. So be sure you stick to
something easy like having the stuff in d:\oldstuff\doom1 and mounting
the d:\oldstuff as your c: drive (mount c d:\oldstuff).

Yes dosbox can run Dos Doom. No dosbox can not launch Doom 95. You gave us "D:\Ultimate Doom for Windows 95" which indicates you are using the windows Doom.

Why not simply launch the wad from there? Doom 95 includes a spot where you can add Pwads.

http://drsleep.newdoom.com/windeu_for_beginne … es/image117.jpg

Theres a spot there for custom wads. Just point it to one of those wads from the CD. You don't need DoomIT.

If you want the original feel then get zdoom or something of it's kind. Allows for more customization and ease of use, but also allows you to see the game as it originally was.

I use zdaemon (zdoom) myself, as I like to play online with crazy wads.
