I receive the following error when trying to run DOOM-IT in DOSBox
DOOM @RESPONSE
ILLEGAL COMMAND: DOOM
"The Depths of Doom Trilogy" box set contains:
Disc 1 - Doom 1 Ultimate Doom for Windows 95
Disc 2 - Doom 2
Disc 3 - Master Levels and Maximum Doom
Disc 1 - Contains the full retail version of Doom plus add on's and extra
episodes like "Thy Flesh Consumed"
Disc 2 - Contains the full retail version of Doom 2
Disc 3 - Contains 20 extra levels called "Doom Master Levels" (contained in
it's own folder) and "Doom Maximum Levels" (contained in it's own folder).
Doom Maximum levels have been created by third party developers\hobbyists
who have built more levels for Doom 1 & 2 which amount to 1,000 + in total
of different levels or (WADS), I don't think these levels have been endorsed by
the original developer ID Software.
Also in the the "Maximum" folder is a "Doom Launcher" called "DOOM-IT",
which when launched, after chosing the level (WAD) you want to play
provided in the DOOM IT launcher, overwrites the original levels of Doom 1
or Doom 2, whichever game you want to play.
I have installed both Doom 1 & 2 onto the same HDD, into the root of the
drive, sucessfully on my Windows XP Home based computer and they both play
OK with NO added patches or updates.
With the DOOM IT launcher I installed it onto the same HDD as the 2 games.
First, it asks where to install it and to create a new directory called
"Maximum".
There are various options on the DOOM-IT interface asking if you want a serial,
network game etc. Which this is a standalone computer so I don't bother with
those options. You then need to tell the DOOM-IT launcher where the Doom
games are installed, for my system it's D:\Doom 1 OR D:\Doom 2, the DOOM-IT
program can only handle filenames of a certain length. The default install
path, when installing either game is C:\Program Files\Doom 1 for Windows 95.
I've had problems in the past when installing either game to their default
path then finding DOOM-IT refuses to find the game. So I now install the
game to the root of the HDD.
You then need to tell the DOOM-IT program your
CDROM drive letter, for me it's F:. It's fine so far with the program. You
can then choose either game Doom 1 or 2, then a WAD, chose other settings,
difficulty, sound etc. You then press "Enter" and
behind the main DOOM-IT interface is a DOS box which says
DOOM @RESPONSE ILLEGAL COMMAND:DOOM
When this Trilogy Pack first came out in the days of 80Mb HDD's it was
suggested you don't install the WAD's onto your HDD as they would be far too
big in capacity to go on an average HDD. So you had to run the DOOM IT
launcher and WADS from the CD .
I have tried installing both Doom games, the DOOM-IT launcher and all the
"Maximum" WADS onto the same HDD but ending up with the same error message.
I have tried trawling the net and "Googling" DOOM-IT errors, Illegal Command
etc but with no satisfactory result to cure this error.
