This board, complete with P4 3ghz… is a good board??

Asus were at the top of the game back then.
I'm sure without checking that it's a fine board.

Dont let the Name ASUS lull you into thinking that every board they made for 775 was a good board, they had a few stinkers in their cheaper boards.

This board is one of their cheaper Lakeport boards, its also made with questionable capacitors which should be checked, but if its caps are fine then it should be solid enough if a little lacking in bells and whistles or any kind of real overclocking utility the more expensive models have.

It does have Core2 support with later BIOS revisions which makes it more useful !

Did you notice all the corrosion on the PCI contacts? If you use a pencil eraser to clean that up it may work fine. If there are any stubborn "chunks" you may need to scrape gently with a tool, just be careful not to damage the contact any more than it already is.

seen the corrosion, I will try to use the pencil eraser.

Also, I would use a brush to clean all that crud off the card, just in case any of it is conductive enough to be causing problems. I have revived cards just by brushing them off many times.

Thanks for the advice! I Will try it. ALso, the brush without rubbing alcohol?

Picked up a 14" CRT TV of some random brand for some retro console gaming (and maybe Amiga).

It's late, 2001, no burn in and not too much use. It works, geometry and colour is fine, but it's very noisy (not only normal 15khz). It even has a built in dvd player, but it does not operate. It has SCART though.

So I've been reading up a lot lately (and safety). Seems like the yoke vibrates and sometimes also around the flyback. Was poking a bit on the yoke with a wooden tool and it changes tone a bit, so I loosened it and reseated it but it is still there, maybe I can solve it with some lacquer.

Also looked at the dvd player, seems to be getting power, and buttons work electrically. Then I found some shorts so I think it's something electrical. I don't really care too much. Found a dvd of You Got Served in it! :-p

My favourite will probably make some people angry, but I like washing things in the dishwasher with no soap. Revived a few things that way.
Drying is a matter of taste, really, but as long as it's dry dry after, so what does that.

Things I built:
Mechwarrior 2 installer for Windows 10/11 Re: A comprehensive guide to install and play MechWarrior 2 on new versions on Windows.
Dos+Windows 3.11 auto-install iso template (for vmware)
Script to backup Win9x\ME drivers from a working install

Took delivery of a second Advantech AIMB-742 motherboard. This one is in better shape the previous one (cleaner and no bulging caps), but does appear to be missing an inductor on the underside of the board.

Also received a pair of Pentium 4 661 processors. I'm hoping these will have an extra multiplier step versus the 651 which might be useful when throttled.

I am aroused about any X86 motherboard that has full functional ISA slot. I think i have problem. Not really into that original (Turbo) XT,286,386 and CGA/EGA stuff. So just a DOS nut.
PS. If I upload RAR, it is a 16-bit DOS RAR Version 2.50.

Where I live water is quite harsh as well, so I always soak/rinse the items in distilled water after being in the dishwasher and finish off with spraying large amounts of IPA over the items to displace any water left under components. Then let it dry for 48 hours or so.

I wouldn't ever put them in the dishwasher because it would most certainly dissolve any paper labels or loosen\damage other stickers, but I have washed several cards in the sink carefully (making sure not to get water on any paper or ink markings) with some mild soap and a toothbrush. They come amazingly clean most of the time and as long as you blow them out to get all the moisture out from under chips and such, and let them dry for a long time they will be fine.

Now for some blitting from the back buffer.

I'm lucky enough to live in the Seattle area where we have a place I'm sure some of you know called RE PC. As fine purveyors of old hardware, RE PC regularly has some gems floating around their bins. I popped in today to get a power adapter for a P4 laptop that I picked up awhile back and ended up getting these as well:

The SB and S3 Virge will be used for a socket 5 project I've been working on. I think the x1950 can replace the x1800 I have in my Win XP machine. Not sure about the other two though maybe the GF2 Pro in the Win98SE system could use a rest and be swapped with the GF3.

Also, can anyone confirm if the Guillemot is in fact a fabled GeForce 256 DDR? My research points to yes but I'm not 100% on it.

Very nice lot of cards! I actually have one of those Gainward Geforce3 Ti 200 cards. I always liked the Golden Sample line. My brother had a Geforce 2 Ti Golden Sample and later got a Ti 4400, which I actually still have.

The Guillemot card is definitely a Geforce 256 DDR. The sticker on it confirms it is an unnumbered Geforce with DDR, and this picture is almost identical since it is an OEM design. 😀

I really wish I lived near a place like that!

Today I got for free a D-Link DU-520 4 external + 1 internal USB 2.0 PCI card with NEC chipset. Sadly I wanted to test it and it will not work, possibily dead, tried it on a testbox based on ECS K7VZA 3.0 motherboard. I don't know what is the cause. Maybe the contacts or the capacitors, I don't know.

Now I followed your advice with pencil eraser and it WORKS! Thanks for your advice!

People usually forget that most dishwashers have a built-in water softener system that works with sodium chloride/table salt. Even if you don't put a tab in the machine it's still going to wash with hot salt water and that doesn't mix too well with metals and electronics and it will leave a nasty residue on everything.

Got a pretty simple s.775 PC with a Geforce 6800 GT (PCIe) in it for ~ $15 (basically bought it just for the GPU). I understand why AGP versions of 6800-series cards cost quite a lot, but can someone explain to me why the PCIe 6800 cards sell for $50+ on ebay? 7800-series PCIe GPUs are cheap, but for some reason 6800-series PCIe GPUs are not, and I don't understand why.

The 6800 series works in Windows 98SE and that includes the PCI-E variants. Anything newer than that from nvidia was never meant to be run in Windows 9x and can be problematic... at least that is what I have read. I haven't personally tried a 7xxx on a 9x machine. It's possible that they work fine, but if the general consensus is that the 6800 series are more stable than the 7000 series, that will directly impact the sale prices. I think there may also be issues with 512MB cards (7900GTX for example), so that may be part of it.

7000 series cards mostly work till you get to the models that the drivers dont officially support under 9x but they too can be made to work with an inf edit, there is only one model that wont work under 98 and thats the GX2 due to SLI.

The 7900GTX is the last unofficially support model and the 7950GT AGP is the last official model.

That said .. you will have a ton of compatibility issues due to drivers mostly and thats the actual reason the 6000 series cards still sell for larger amounts of money, compatibility with both drivers and hardware.

I'm new here, so maybe its not right forum to ask, if not point me in right direction or just remove this post.
Can someone help me identify this board/card I bought today on flea market, I think its some sort of upgrade - overdrive or maybe some proprietary card.
Thanks!
