Hello esteemed community,

I hope this finds everyone well. I've recently acquired a Toshiba T1910CS, which works beautifully, except for the floppy drive. As a backup solution, I purchased another T1910CS for parts, hoping that its floppy drive might be functional so I could swap them out.

However, if this solution doesn't pan out, I'm curious about the options available for reinstalling the DOS operating system and transferring data onto the laptop. Given the limitations of this older model, I wanted to seek advice from the experienced experts on this forum.

Additionally, I'd like to inquire if there exists any form of an external sound card or audio solution compatible with the T1910CS. I'm interested in enhancing the audio capabilities of this vintage gem.

Your insights and guidance would be invaluable. Thank you in advance for your time and expertise.

Warm regards,
Pavel

floppy in the second one might be in similar state in need of a new belt https://retrocomputing.stackexchange.com/ques … 10cs-486-laptop
For reinstalling easiest option is removing HDD, using 44pin 2.5 to 40pin 3.5 converter and another somewhat period correct computer to transfer files.
For now it depends on what you have on the hard drive, MS-DOS v6.0 and Norton Commander v4.0 & v5.0 will let you use https://www.huinck.net/kabel/ca_InterLink.html
with dos 5 you can try serial null modem cable and http://jcoppens.com/soft/howto/bootstrap/index.en.php or Re: is this null modem cable pinout in reverse?

COPY FILENAME.EXT /B COM1 /B and COPY COM1 /B FILENAME.EXT /B

just dont forget to setup com speed with "mode" command (for example BAUD=9600 PARITY=n DATA=8)

your first step should be copying over something like Norton Commander (4.0 is only 400KB) to make copying easier without all that typing

As for the external sound devices, your options are as follows:
- PCMCIA sound devices. They have very different capabilities, you can check my signature (for the chart and the whole thread is also worth reading) for more details. Yet they are hard to find and expensive.
- Covox - it's a parallel port device, supports only digital sounds in a limited number of games. It's also supported by some emulators that extend compatibility. Clone sold here https://www.serdashop.com/ under CVX4 name.
- Disney Sound Source. Another parallel port device, supports only digital sounds in a limited number of games. Pops up once in a while on ebay.
- OPL3LPT - another parallel port device to support now only Adlib music. Available here https://www.serdashop.com/

I higly recommend to watch the videos from 8 bit guy that cover the latter three devices.

Neither sound nor ram situation is going to be great.

Looking at https://hwmuseum.pp.ua/laptop/1536.html and https://www.minuszerodegrees.net/manuals/Tosh … %20Addendum.pdf Toshiba t6w12a exposes full ISA bus and there is lots of space for battery. Someone really dedicated could hack an ISA sound card in there.

Just one follow-up. Do you think that this one will work? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/374830372516
Any expected troubles with fat16 or something like that with file system if I connect that 2.5 HDD IDE from Tohshiba laptop to Windows computer through that USB hub?

Also, any hints how to reinstall whole OS on that HDD if I don't have functional floppy? I would love to have DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.11 there 😁

thanks!

USB converters usually dont work with CHS only 120MB-200MB drives
might be easiest to just replace that floppy belt 😀

You were right 😀 not working 😀
BUT, I was able to use my desktop with serial port and VMWare Player with DOS virtual machine there for transfer data. Slow, but working great 😁
