Good afternoon everyone, I have a question regarding some tests that I am carrying out with the Voodoo 5 5500 with two different kits, they are:

SOYO SY-6VBA133
PowerLeap + P3 tualatin 1.4G
256MB of memory
HD 20G
VIA 4in1 4.35 drivers
Voodoo 5 5500

ASUS K7M
AMD Athlon 700Mhz slot A
256MB of memory
HD 20G
VIA 4in1 4.35 drivers
voodoo 5 5500

the 3dmark results are:

My question is: shouldn't the kit equipped with the pentium 3 tualatin 1.4G give me a higher score on the video card?

Yes, much higher; your score should be around or above 10,000 marks @800x600x16bpp if this is 3dMark 1999. Did you disable VSYNC? 3DMark 1999 won't disable VSYNC by default like all of the newer versions.

I didn't disable it, where can I do that?

You can use the attached utility from 3dfx. It adds a tab on the 3dfx Tools for Overclocking and disabling VSYNC for Direct X. Make sure you exit 3DMark before making the modification. You do not have to restart your machine for the changes to take effect.

I managed to disable vsync, both kits had improvements but the p3 kit still came in second place:

AMD : 5774 3dmarks
P3 tualatin: 5392 3dmarks

A 600/100MHz Katmai will be around 4600 and an 800/100MHz Coppermine will be around 6400. Can you verify your CPU is actually running at 1.4GHz? Download the CPU-Z Vintage Edition for Windows 9x here: https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z_html to validate the CPU and FSB.

Looking at your CPU marks shows how much faster it was the than the Athlon, but just double-checking.

Using the 3dfx Tools, except for VSYNC, do you have all settings at factory defaults? No AA is enabled, right? What are the results if you run 3DMark with just one of the VSA chips enabled?

I did the test with just one of the gpus activated, the result was:

5270 3dmarks

The card is probably fine. That number is just slightly lower than what you're getting now, which is what I have seen when I have tested. The card is OK in the Athlon, also. The CPUs are fine in both systems.

What OS are you running?
What DirectX version is installed?
What Voodoo5 driver are you running?
Is there a sound card installed?

Try running "Unreal Gold" in Glide mode. You should get a number around 120-130fps (make sure VSYNC is disabled) at 800x600x16bpp running the Castle Flyby demo. @1024x768x16, the Voodoo5 should still achieve over 100fps. This will tell us if DirectX is a problem.

Any FPS counter I can use? I tested flaps, but it doesn't work, I used a Glide dll but it ruins the whole game.

Obs: using directx the flaps work and exceed 130 FPS in some cases

Unreal has own statistics. If you have Unreal Gold you can enable it in the menu or just use console command "stat fps" in any version.

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.

I managed to activate the FPS counter on the glide, but what information do I need to consider? frame or polys?

To properly benchmark Unreal, open the console by pressing tilde (~) and type in the following:

timedemo 1
start unreal

After that, close the console window by pressing tilde again. This will make the game run its flyby demo and display the minimum, average and maximum frame rate on the right side of the screen.

PC#1: Pentium MMX 166 / Soyo SY-5BT / S3 Trio64V+ / Voodoo1 / YMF719 / AWE64 Gold / SC-155
PC#2: AthlonXP 2100+ / ECS K7VTA3 / Voodoo3 / Audigy2 / Vortex2
PC#3: Core 2 Duo E8600 / Foxconn P35AX-S / X800 / Audigy2 ZS
PC#4: i5-3570K / MSI Z77A-G43 / GTX 970 / X-Fi

Looking good. Which version of DirectX is installed? You can run DXDIAG to determine. You should have DirectX 7.0 installed at minimum for this system. If you're running Windows 98 Second Edition DirectX 6.x is preinstalled. If you're running Windows ME, DirectX 7.x is preinstalled.

If I read you correctly, you're using the latest official driver or the latest driver from a CD? Your driver should be 1.04.00 and 3dfx Tools version of 2.6.1.110 for best all-around performance and compatibility. You can verify this from the 3dfx Tools Info Tab. If you do have the most recent version, you might want to consider reinstalling the driver before moving on to a DirectX 7 reinstallation.

You can get the drivers here: https://soggi.org/drivers/3dfx-voodoo.htm
