I got this laptop at a thrift store for about 6 dollars (Canadian). Aside from a few broken keys, it works pretty well!

Its original OS was Windows 98, but it had XP when I got it, so I did a fresh install of Win98. I got the display drivers to work just fine, but I've been struggling to get it to play audio. Sound was working in XP, so the speakers or sound card can't be broken.

Here are some links to drivers that I tried:
https://archive.org/details/evo-n600c-restore (Says it's for 98)
https://www.philscomputerlab.com/ess-es1988-allegro-1.html (Says it's for 9x)
https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Sear … x?q=ESS+allegro (Only says it supports 2000 or XP)
https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/swdetail … SG_I11057-32198 (Only says it supports XP)

If anyone has managed to get sound to work in 98 on this model (or at least a similar one), can you please tell me how?
If you need more information, feel free to ask questions.

EDIT: Just noticed that there is a category specifically for sound. Sorry for posting this under "General Old Hardware". Is it possible for an admin to maybe move this to "Sound"?

Ok There is a driver for Win98SE (not orig Win98) for the EVO N600c. It never had Win98 original from what I can see, so if that is what you installed you may never get the audio to work...
Drivers see here: http://web.archive.org/web/20030820211609/htt … ate/4_2044.html
audio takes you here: http://web.archive.org/web/20030817071845/htt … load/11013.html
gives you Softpac # 17163 and 18965.
so for 17163 go here: https://ftp.zx.net.nz/pub/archive/ftp.hp.com/ … 500/sp17163.txt
and here: https://ftp.zx.net.nz/pub/archive/ftp.hp.com/ … 500/sp17163.exe
Hope that helps. Would just post the files but better you see where they came from..... 😁

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun

Sorry for the late response. I tried sp18965 and 17163, but neither of them worked. However, once a chord sound manged to play when I was installing the driver, but after restarting, sound was nowhere to be heard.
I would like to note that sometimes when I try to install the driver, it prompts to put in the Windows 98 Second Edition CD to look for files like swmidi.sys, dmusic.sys, etc. etc., but when I put in my CD, it doesn't find the files. Maybe I should try a different iso?

For Win98: 4.10.2222A is SE.

You can try the official ESS drivers: https://www.zx.net.nz/mirror/www.esstech.com/ … pp/drivers.html

Did you get the ISO off Archive dot org? Those are a mess to find a good one. Winworld is better for that.
