I recently got a Tyan trinity400 S1854 motherboard along with some sound cards I've bought.
I'm not so much into socket 370 mobo's so I don't know if this is a good mobo to put my money on if I want to build a nice system for late 90's/early 2000 windows games?

tyan usually make motherboards aimed at the buissness sector not the general public, they are well made but expensive. they also specialise in dual cpu boards

I have a similar VIA Apollo Pro133A mainboard in a spare system, mine is a Chaintech clone. IIRC Swaaye mentioned quite a few Apollo boards are cheap and unreliable, but mine behaves well, and this Tyan board should also be among the better ones.
In any case the Pro133A is the successor of the normal Pro133, so it's VIA's second try at this Pentium-III chipset. The proper 133MHz bus, AGP-4x and ATA-66 are nice features, that should give it an edge above the legendary intel 440BX mainboards. If it wasn't for the fact that it has only one ISA slot and that it has trouble getting any good benchmarks compared to the 440BX.

This VIA chipset should benefit from tweaking the latency settings.

Like the 440BX you can use adapters to make Tualatin core CPU's work in the Slot-1 or in the socket-370. as shown here: Topic: (im)Possibilities wit Slotket CPU adapters?

I imagine that part of VIA's bad chipset rep comes from the fact that most of the mobos were built by some shoddy mobo manufacturers. Many of the issues were caused by poorly programmed BIOSs that didn't set up the chipset properly. That PCI latency patch for VIA chipsets just reprograms various chipset registers that were incorrectly setup by the BIOS.

Even Intel chipsets fall victim to crap mobos though. My Abit BF6 is a PCI IRQ sharing nightmare that won't work stably with certain cards in certain slots. I have spent hours on more than one occasion figuring out what order a set of PCI cards had to be in to work without lock ups. It had ACPI problems forever (esp in 98SE). Softmenu can forget your settings occasionally (pretty rare though). It's still better than most Super 7 boards I've used though!!

If using slotket is not a problem and if u need more than 1 ISA slot, I recomend SOYO 6BA+ IV.I have tried several boards (back then in 2000.) with via apolo 133, via693, via694 and BX chipsets, the winner was Soyo 6BA+ IV with hpt370 raid controller, had to use slotket adapter thou, but it had 2 ISA slots. Abit had a good mobo (with ATA133 ctrl.) also but it had only 1 ISA slot.

I'm up and running now with this motherboard...actually typing this post from the machine it's in 😀

Quite pleased with it's performance so far, dual booting Win98SE & Win2000 pro on it.
Only issue I had is that i cannot seem to upgrade to the latest chipset drivers in Windows 98 with the Via 4in1 driver package..I just get a "registry error" message so I'm just running with the drivers from Win98
Next step is to max out the system with 1.5gigs of ram, 1ghz PIII cpu and an AGP Voodoo 5500 instead of the PCI version I'm currently running

Mobo no longer works after testing a newly aquired Voodoo 5500 in it...with the card in the all the keyboard lights are on but nothing happens when I push the ATX power button.
Switched back to my Voodoo 5500 PCI...board works briefly but letting the system rest and then do another power on the keyboards lights are on again and it doesn't power on...
Tried another working PSU with no luck..

Not sure If I dare to try this Voodoo 5500 AGP in another system if it was IT which fried my mobo?

Err..I think I'm late for this party,...but here is (again) a glimpse of my W98/ME/2K based machine which is somewhat a similar system, in terms of cpu and it's socket. (Since I see there is the word "R.I.P."inscribed on this thread, I might even be late for the funeral! 😜)

About your Voodoo5 frying your mobo, this info might be helpful (albeit too late) :

"All Banshee, Voodoo3 and Voodoo5 AGP Cards are 2xAGP 3.3V only!
Do not use in modern 4x/8x AGP 1.5V only Motherboards!
Failure to comply can cause damage to both the Card and the Motherboard!
Consult your Motherboard manual for 2xAGP 3.3V support before use!

Dont get overly excited, it's almost impossible to plug in a AGP x1/x2 (3.3V) card into a 1.5V (AGP 4x/8x) slot because of a hardware incompatibility. You might do it with a hammer and some tongs I guess, but thats hardcore S&M 😜

And of course, s370 definitively supports AGP 1x/2x cards (3dfx too!):
• One 2x/4x AGP 2.0 Slot (official specs)

BTW, I hope you had V5 5500 plugged in correctly? You didnt forget the 12V plug, right?

That was what I thought 😀

I'm going to test it in my spare s socket 7 Epox mobo....and use it was a guinea pig 😁...it's expendable anyway 😁
