Just finished the first phase of building my midi tower with Pentium III and voodoo 3 , this motherborad has no onboard option for sound and I'll plug one of the many soundblasters I have in boxes , drawers , old mobos etc
I found all these :
CT2980 ISA card
CT1600 Soundblaster Pro 2 ISA card
CT4170 Sound Blaster Vibra 16XV ISA card
CT4810 Soundblaster PCI card
SB0100 Soundblaster Live!5.1 PCI card
SB1070 Soundblaster 5.1 PCI card
So what I put now ? what do you sugest ? output will be simple stereo and backward compatibility would be desirable .
thanks in advance for any help

Assuming you are using this setup with Windows 98, I would go with an SB Live for EAX support.

Pentium 4 Multi-OS Build
486 DX4-100 with 6 sound cards
486 DX-33 with 5 sound cards

What do you plan on running? For Windows use the Live! 5.1, but if you also plan to do any DOS gaming, I'd also use the CT4170 if you are targeting end of era DOS games that could do 640x480, while having OK Adlib, but still far superior to the what the Live outputs for DOS music.

If you take the SBLive! you’re better off with the VxD drivers. The WDM are slower and can cause stutter (at least it doesn’t work well with my Pentium III 3dfx Win98 build 😉).

Totally agree with the SB0100 recommendation! I have that card installed in my P3 (TNT2) and P4 (Voodoo3) and it's really an impressive card emulation and MIDI wise...

Just make sure you follow the guide: Guide: Installing Windows 9x and DOS drivers on Sound Blaster Live! cards (version 3.1)

#2: P4 1.8Ghz, 512Mb, Voodoo3 3000, SB Live!
#3: P3 866Mhz, 384Mb, Riva TNT2 AGP, SB Live!
#4: P233 MMX, 64Mb, ATI Rage II+, SB 32
#5: P100, 32Mb , S3 Virge, Sb16 & PicoGus v2.0

Doesn't vxd cut eax compatibility.

You've got it backwards. It's WDM drivers which have issues with EAX under Win9x.

When using the official SB0100 installation CD, the installer asks whether you want to use VxD or WDM drivers. On that screen, Creative actually states that VxD drivers should be used for gaming while WDM drivers are more suitable for professional tasks like music creation. It's the same for their Audigy cards.

The key is to have an early P4... It has a PC Chips M925 motherboard with universal AGP. I wanted to make sure my V3 wouldn't be bottlenecked... Since that V3 is probably running at full capacity, I have a 50mm fan on top of the heatsink, and a 120mm intake fan blowing directly towards the card.

very interesting indeed , until now what I have read is that P4 is simply not compatible even if it has a universal agp and even if it has 3.3v support , what is the motherboard model exactly ?

Not true! It's a micro-ATX coupled with a 1.8Ghz P4: https://theretroweb.com/motherboards/s/pcchips-m925lr

So it's very small and packs a punch! I get 3dMark scores pretty close to the record score I could find in old forums without overclocking anything on that thing...

You have installed Windows 98 ? I found in my stuff one P4 1.8 mobo , It doesn't support AGP 3.3v but you gave me idea , to use it with some nice AGP card plus Voodoo 2 PCI .

Yes, installed Windows 98 flawlessly. Lucky you for being a owner of a V2! You sure won't be bottlenecking that V2!

I had every single version of Voodoos that came out, but got rid of them... 🙁

I just finished the mobo and it seems to fit windows 98 pretty well . Northwood P4 1.8 1gb+ Geforce fx5600 128bit - 256mb . Haven't install any game yet and still have to plug the V2 in pci . I think it is my first succefull install of windows 98 on a P4 . The speedy ones simply does not want them From the install rarely go beyond second boot .

Perfect rig for the NOLF series! What sound card did you take for this build?

At the moment is with the onboard AC97. Drivers for windows 98 work ok . I can put one of the remaining PCI or look for another Live! . These can easily found.

Today I searched every P4 and motherboard I had , mostly one step before the recycle bin . And was lucky , never noticed before , I found something interesting . GA -8SMML , micro atx , with support of agp 1x 2x 4x and 3.3v . Checked with intel i740 2x card . I also found a second P4 1.8 Northwood , so I can make a system like yours . I still have a V3 3500 , so I can use it in this build
