Hi,

I am trying to run some early 199x DOS games with a SB16 that require an early CT-VOICE.DRV probably from drivers around 1992 or 1993 as the updated drivers from 1994 have an updated CT-VOICE.DRV that is not compatible with the games.

We have a SB16 value and a SB16v2 (maybe too new?) from memory but I have not found the original install floppy disks so far, although I will keep looking.

So what I would like to ask is do you have an old DOS floppy installation disk from 1992 or 1993 for an SB16.

I would like to install the drivers myself but having the right CT-VOICE.DRV would be enough for my needs.

These are the versions I have;
14/10/1994 31.0 KB (31,842 bytes) version 4.05
15/02/1994 31.1 KB (31,866 bytes) version 4.01

Also I have this but am not sure where I got it from or if it is official or not;
06/10/1993 17.9 KB (18,386 bytes) version 3.07.03
(It does work but would like to know if there is other versions from around this time, also I am not sure if I *installed it* as I have not been able to reproduce the file on further trial installations.)

Are there any other versions, or which DOS driver disk has that 1993 file on it? Please if someone can help as I don't want to download either 300mb or 750mb to *hopefully* to find what I am looking for.

For anyone interested in how the different versions of CT-VOICE.DRV can effect some old games you can test with the 1993 "Innocent Until Caught", it will not run with CT-VOICE.DRV versions 4.01 or 4.05 with SB16, even if 'emulated' via Dosbox.

Any help appreciated.
Thanks.

I have a ct-voice.drv dated 23/07/92 for a Sound Blaster Pro. I also have one dated 10/08/94 for the Sound Blaster Vibra16. I may also have a newer version, but as yours are already too new, I doubt it'll work. If these don't work, try Vogonsdrivers. There are lots of Sound Blaster drivers there.

Hi guys, thanks for the quick responses but I need a file for the SB16 aka Soundblaster 16.

If you open the CT-VOICE.DRV file in notepad you will see at the top the name of the soundcard supported and also a version number. For example;
CT-VOICE Creative Sound Blaster 16.... Version 3.07.03

Or am I mistaken and that CT-VOICE.DRV is instead 'universal'?

PS: The original early SB16 DOS installation floppy disk driver from 1992 or 1993 might be in one of those multi hundred MB bundles that have been accumulated? If so maybe a kind sole that already has them can single out that driver for me please? 😉

Thanks.

The Vibra16 is a SB16 😀.

The Vibra16 driver is version 4.04 and supports "Creative Sound Blaster Cards". I don't know what version the other one is and it says "Creative Sound Blaster Pro".

Ok, sorry about that. But I will need SB16 CT-VOICE.DRV versions earlier than 4.01 as I have tested 4.01 & 4.05 and know both will not work with some early 1990 games.

So, I still require the earlier drivers from my previous post.

In the meantime I hopefully will be able to ask my brother soon if he might still have the original floppy install disks... if they are still useable.

Not much use I know, but one of the Vogonsdrivers downloads has a ct-voice.drv dated 29/11/1991 for the Sound Blaster Pro. Try looking at Vogonsdrivers for SB16 drivers.

I already had a bit of a search but usually only finding the updated 4.05 versions. Although I already mentioned about the "300mb or 750mb" driver bundles, but being on a limited shared connection I would prefer not to use that bandwidth if I can help it.

So, I'll just wait and see if some kind person that either has those driver bundles already can single out or maybe already has an old 1992/1993 floppy DOS driver installation disk. 😅

Vibra was released as a cost-reduced Sound Blaster 16
May the problem is the card it self can't support it
Maybe you need the older Sound Blaster Pro 2 CT1600 or a Real Sound Blaster 16
CT1730, CT1740, CT1749, CT1750, CT1759, CT1770, CT1779, CT1780, CT1789, CT1790, CT1799, CT2230, CT2290

I am not entirely clued in as to what the cause of the issue is but it is a known issue to some on this forum from other posts.

Appears to be related to the size of the CT-VOICE.DRV file. If it is 30kb or more then the game/s will not run.

If using the CT-VOICE.DRV from the earlier SB16 install disks which was around 20kb in size then there are no problems at all.

As far as I know it is not a compatability issue with the cards but something to do with loading that driver in memory where 30kb is too much.

There is a thread about it here: Running Innocent Until Caught with SB support

Also, as stated in that thread there is a SB16 CT-VOICE.DRV around 20kb and as I posted at the top of this page here I have an SB16 18kb version 3.07.03 which seems to work.

I just don't know where or what driver package that came from. If we can sort that out then we can use that as a *solution* for using these old games with a SB16 card or when emulating a SB16 with Dosbox.

Sorry, that is for a soundblaster pro and also 1991 is too early.

According to wikipedia: SB16 date invented June 1992.

I am sure SB16 drivers from 1992 and 1993 are probably problem free.
I would guess that 1994 is when they changed to versions 4.x and they changed to this 30kb file architecture.
Unfortunately the easily available files one can find are usually of the 4.x version variety. Which is why we must go back to 1992/1993 SB16 drivers to find what I'm looking for.

IE: Would have been floppy disks not CD's as my drivers back in the day did not come on CD. Also, probably looking at the first SB16 cards released in 1992/1993 not the later 1994 onwards SB16 cards as they would have just come with 4.x version drivers. I would guess that all CD-ROM based SB16 drivers would be 4.x versions only.

Nah, is quite easy process.

Can use sb16 emulation under dosbox to install the drivers which you can then access/copy.

Not sure if you have problems with official dosbox but I know this can be done with Taewoong/Ykhwong builds if need be.

Ok, thankyou for looking. I have got some disks off my brother which I am going through now. As far as I can tell I have been able to fully read them so I am in the process of making backup copies now. I will then install them and see what version files they have. They look like early 1994 so might not be suitable but fingers crossed will have 1993 CT-VOICE.DRV inside.

Anybody have those 2x large driver bundles at the start of thread and can check if they have any 1992/1993 SB16 drivers?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Upd1:
Looks like I couldn't read the disks fully after all. My backups were installable to a point where I could get the CT-VOICE.DRV though. Unfortunately turned out to be:
15/02/1994 31.1 KB (31,866 bytes) version 4.01
Surely, if the SB16 first came out in 1992 then there must have been some 1993 driver disks.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Upd2:
Ok, I have been having some luck with an online driver website. I have found some 1992/1993 drivers and am just going through checking them. First one I checked is from Jan 1993 which worked fine. I will see if I can find one closer to the end of 1993. I'll let you know once I finish.

Finally I have figured out how to get a SB16 CT-VOICE.DRV from end of 1993 which maybe the last possible/public release? before they switched to the 4.x versions at beginning of 1994.

This is what I had to do;
1. Install the original 1993 SB16 installation disks. This will get you CT-VOICE.DRV 19 JAN 1993 18.1 KB (18,560 bytes) no version number listed.
2. Go to Creative Labs technical support website for Sound Blaster 16 on DOS and download this; File Name: cspu.exe [Advanced Signal Processing upgrade (CSP.SYS v1.13)], Filesize: 1.2 MB, Release date: 30 Dec 94
3. Install the files that the cspu.exe extracts which will update your previous 1993 installation. This will get you CT-VOICE.DRV 06 OCT 1993 17.9 KB (18,386 bytes) Version 3.07.03

*IMPORTANT* Don't try installing cspu.exe update over an 1994 installation because it will not change your CT-VOICE.DRV because it will already be a 1994 version and the update will skip/leave it as the 1994 version.

Now with that CT-VOICE.DRV 06 OCT 1993 17.9 KB (18,386 bytes) Version 3.07.03 you can play some of those old games that don't normally like the modern SB16 drivers like 'Innocent Until Caught',etc. Notice you will hear the spaceship land at the end of the games introduction sequence now as well. This will fix problems with real SB16 soundcards under DOS and also emulated SB16 under Dosbox.

The 19 JAN 1993 18.1 KB (18,560 bytes) CT-VOICE.DRV will also work but I like to have the most recent version that works that I can get my hands on. 😊

Cheers.

PS: Here is the CT-VOICE.DRV for those that can't go through the steps above. Just overwrite your old one in the C:/SB16/DRV directory. Backup your old one first if you want?

**Just check that you have your 'slashes' the right way around for the setsound command below (the ones shown below are the wrong way around) because on vogons website won't show or let you use the 'opposite' correct ones.**

    As long as you have SET SOUND=C:/SB16 in your AUTOEXEC.BAT or Dosbox.conf[autoexec] section you should be good to go! You may also need SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 H5 P330 T6
