The pic with config.sys before those changes are a few posts back with the word after on it and the is config.sys after those changes

Move the HIMEM.SYS entry to the very top.
Add the following in a new line after DOS=UMB:
DEVICE=C:\Windows\EMM386.EXE AUTO
Post latest CONFIG.SYS
In a DOS promt, type:
Mem /c/p
Post output.
First pic is new config.sys and second and third pic are the men /c/p command
Reboot.
What happens when you test sound in DIAGNOSE.EXE, do you get any error messages?
Can you type REM and a space just before the CTCM entry in CONFIG.SYS, reboot and test with DIAGNOSE.EXE?
Any error messages?
1st test sound - same as before - 8-bit and 16 bit working and synthesize and awe wavetable still no sound
2nd sound test after REM - aweutil failed to initialize and the 8-bit,16-bit working and nothing out of synthesize sound and the awe wavetable is not there at all to test sound
Do you get any error messages in DIAGNOSE.EXE when you hear no sound?
nope no error messages
Anyone know what the analog path is from the EMU8k?

no idea
Do hear any FM in games?
what would be classed as fm - what kind of games
Just choose normal Sound Blaster options in a DOS game of your choice. AWE64 has an OPL3 clone.
no nothing
doom 1 & 2 - no fm but there is sfx
wolf3d - detects soundblaster but no fm but there is sfx
commander Keen 5 & 6 - detects soundblaster but no fm
when try quake 1 - the sfx sound is heard but the cd audio is heard with cd audio cable plugged in to card
Probably something wrong with the soundcard hardware. You could try the card in another motherboard, or try another similar soundcard in this motherboard to eliminate more things.
will try tomorrow and the sound card that was in before was my soundblaster pro 2 and no issues except for a couple of games where the sound went garbled but try those games that did that on old sound card on awe64 and the sound isn't garbled
The AWE64 pipes all FM to the EMU8k block which sends it to the analog mixer chip after applying effects like reverb. This particular card appears to integrate EMU8k functionality, analog mixer, and the bus chip in one IC. As such, there's no possible signal break that I can think of and we must be looking at a chip fault or exotic software incompatibility.
What driver package are you using for this card? Is it original or a download?

downloaded from creative website as didn't get original disc with card
Hmm... That should be good, but I guess you could try the driver from Metropoli.

Pretty good chance it's the same, but I think we're rapidly running out of moves.
