I have a laptop with an onboard ESS Maestro-2E. I can adjust the volume from within Windows, but in DOS it's so quiet that unless I'm somewhere that it's dead silent, audio is inaudible. I also have to hold my ear up to the speaker to hear any Adlib FM synthesis.
There used to be a tool ESSVOL for older generation cards, but it does not "detect" the Maestro 2 and I can't find any alternative.
Does anyone know how to adjust the volume for this card in pure DOS? It's practically inaudible by default.
I tried a generic SB Pro mixer, but it has no effect on any volume:

I've attached the datasheet for this chip. Is it possible to adjust the volume via registers with DEBUG?
