Irritating but common. Looks like this is probably them: https://stason.org/TULARC/pc/sound-cards-mult … BSOUND-503.html

With thanks to this thread: Re: ESS 1688F sound card

Does your box have any other contents (disks, manual)? Always nice to get that stuff along with box photos up onto archive.org.

The ES1688 (the non-PNP version - same as the OP's) is one of my favorite sound cards. Excellent compatibility and sound quality!

That's a nice card - the best AudioDrive I personally came across back in my ESS testing days:

Re: ESS AudioDrive (ES1868) - a surprisingly good ISA sound card

It's made by Labway, who seem to have done quite a few quality low-cost cards with various chipsets.

Yes, I still have the box, but unfortunately I threw out the manual and the floppy somewhere about 2005-2010. The content of the floppy was the ESS VxD driver for Win3.1 and Win9x, and the AudioDrive software. I purchased this card in 1996. This card was my only ISA soundcard, followed by a PCI Sound Blaster. It was part of a 2x86 12mhz, 40MB HDD, 1MB RAM + TVGA, later with a 4x Sony CD-ROM drive. 😀 Now I plan to install this card into my retro PII 400Mhz config for Win98SE.

Yesterday I got this as a free gift with videocard from an ebay seller. The floppy disk with the drivers is original and in perfectly readable condition.

Fair use/fair dealing exception

The card had a problem with shorted traces on its back in a place with protective solder mask rubbed off due to someone's unsuccessful attempt to tin them. Some solder wick and a tiny drop of fresh green UV light curing solder mask - pretty easy repair and now the soundcard works again as expected.

There are some jumpers to configure IRQ, DMA, I/O address, but is there possibility to bypass its own Philips TDA1517 amplifier (its pretty "lo-fi" sounding to me) like on some newer ES1868/9 based cards?

P.S. Here it is image file from original floppy disk with drivers:
