I've been reading a lot about Ensoniq AudioPCI sound cards these days.
It seems like a good choice for late DOS and Windows 95 games, but there are a couple of issues:
Ensoniq's driver supports Soundscape and Soundblaster Pro modes, while later Creative removed Soundscape mode and replaced it with Soundblaster 16.

Is it not possible to combine the 2 drivers so that soundscape and soundblaster 16 compatibility remains?

I also read that the OPL3 emulation is of poor quality.
Is it not possible to upgrade it via a driver?
Maybe it is possible to disable it and put an ISA OPL3 sound card next to it, for example Yamaha Audician?

I also read that several versions came out, for example AudioPCI 1000, 2000, 3000, 5000.
What is the difference between them?

One often overlooked "trick" is to select General Midi instead of SoundBlaster when games allow it.
This will instead use the .ecw "soundfont" file

I think if you renamed the 8MB file as default it would it in dos, but not 100% sure on that.

Otherwise yes you could use 2 sound cards side by side, you can't disable OPL games will just output to both devices
