Do you have access to a EEPROM/flash programmer?
If no, it does not make sense to buy a chip, just buy a working S3 Virge DX, will be cheaper most likely.

SST27SF256 28-pin flash EEPROM is better alternative than these UV-erasable EPROMs. I bought two of these recently (one to change OTP ROM for S3 ViRGE 325 videocard and one for XTIDE boot ROM in 3Com NIC) from the well known chinese "fleabay". There's also 512 kbit (64 kB) version - SST27SF512, but S3 ViRGE 325/DX/GX BIOSes are 32 kB in size.

Well, if the person has the skills, he/she can use a larger EEPROM.

Of course, he/she can. I'm just pointing that it's easier to use EEPROM chip instead of EPROM - needs only programmer, not UV-light eraser + programmer.
