Trying to get this to work on my windows 98 laptop (1.8ghz 1gb ram 256mb video) but now matter which version I try (works fine on my other laptop) I get error! Failed to open GCF archive: "C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\source materials.gcf" make sure its available and decrypted.

I had hl2 running on another windows 98 computer years ago not sure why this doesn't work. does anyone know how to get the game working on 98?

The early versions of valve games stored most of the game files via gcf. (They can be extracted with GCFScape if you want but don't have to be.)
First check that location to see if the files are in that location.
IIRC the location is also a registry entry that can be changed.

now its giving me some 'unable to init shader system' error. is it because i only have directx 7.0a installed? i'd actually like to keep 7 if possible.

edit. works with the unofficial August 2007 directx 9.0c for windows 98. Btw i'm using the first version of 98 not se. surprised it works, and that may explain why those other versions didn't work to.
