I am trying to run a Windows game named 'MechWarrior 2' released by Activision. The issue it has is it runs very fast, too fast to be playable. I have tried limiting the cores but it doesn't help. What application would you suggest to slow down this game?

Play it in DOSBox, with the DOS version. There, you can set cycles.

I was happy with the Titanium Version because of textured graphics, although it had a lot of shortcomings. I have been playing the DOS version for quite a long time, but I wondered if it's time to try something new.

Another game having such issue is Lego Island, although MattKC fixed it.

Isn't there a generic patch that you can apply to control the speed? At least for games that don't have DOS/console version

Not that I know of. Each game is coded differently.

I have the Titanium Edition too. I was glad to have it. But Activision blew it.

Even on correct period hardware, on which the game runs fine, the third mission (the one were you must set blow up a reactor core) of Clan Wolf doesn't work at all.

You are better off playing the DOS version.

If you want better textures and bilinear filtering, the 3DFX edition inside PCem is your best bet. Warning: PCem is demanding.

I wish there was a sourceport/re-implementation of Mech2, but alas... 🙁

Does that mean people could not complete Titanium Edition?

Yea I have seen games, like Jane's USNF, that can't launch some mission or ctds after a mission. MW2 is found to corrupt the heap and maybe all these buggy games were doing that? Surprisingly that didn't occur on Win11+DxWnd, after using a better heap management. I wonder if that's the case with this game too.

MW2 would not work in versions of Windows after 7. It was after a deliberate effort I got it to work with DxWnd and the developer implemented the MW2HOOK in itself. Additionally the Battlepack and Titanum versions with the Pentium version started working and I got the idea to play it. Only for the speed. Maybe I can write the guide if the speed can be fixed?

I think I'll use a Win7 VM, where it doesn't have the speed issue to test Titanium. PCEM works with 166MHz Pentium fine with occasional drops to 96% speed but since the game has issues in period correct hardware I won't try it. I was looking for a 3Dfx copy too, but they won't deliver here nor do I find a downloadable option.
