Ahh after reading the user manual: You need the Jog Dial Navigator Utility. Found references to it with descriptions of use. Actually found the English version 1.1.2 under a similar Sony VAIO PCG laptop drivers archive.
Will add it to the library tonight with a description text file and extracted help.chm all zipped up, so you can see what it does/how it works before you install...
add to the library here: http://www.vogonsdrivers.com/getfile.php?file … 854&menustate=0
Attached the Sony manual here with the Jog Dial references..

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun

Do you have a link to that other laptop's driver archive, by chance?

Yes but you cannot get the files from directly from them, you have to search the actual file names linked thru google to find them else where. Here are some links to tell what driver/app is and the file name needed.
drivers: http://sonyvaiodriver.com/category/sony-vaio- … -nvr23-drivers/
and http://www.opendrivers.com/modeldriver/sony_p … r-download.html
The Jog Dial Navigator was a bit trickier and was found looking at the various Sony Laptops like Sony PCG-C1VFK and PCG-SRX41P which also came out about same time and has the Jog Dial,
that led to https://www.helpdrivers.com/notebooks/Sony/PC … -SR/PCG-SRX41P/ and https://www.helpdrivers.com/notebooks/Sony/PCG-SR/PCG-SR21K/ for files names.
Only the one for SRX41P was found....once you get the file names you can get most drivers here: https://rebyte.me/en/sony/6243/ but not the apps except two.
Not sure if that helps...using Archive org Wayback machine helped a bit but most file back in 2002 were never saved proper...
and lists the Jog Dial Navigator file name found thru major other searching....
Still looking for jdd_sny_64002010702.exe or any variant which is the first Sony Jog Dial Navigator but no luck so far....

Mostly I'm just trying to find some of the Sony software that would have come pre-loaded on this computer, as it has both composite video in *and* an "i-Link" connector, which tells me it would have come with some kind of video capture/editing software.

The manual lists the software included, looks like DV-Gate is the app to capture video off the I-link/1394 connection. It does not list any other video software afaik...
