Why does the computer hang on command prompt with blinking '_', on the black screen, after restarting in MS-DOS mode for Windows 98 machine? The computer won't boot into MS-DOS mode...

Check the properties of "C:\Windows\Exit to DOS.pif", this is the file responsible for restarting in MS-DOS mode. If you can't make it work, just delete it, Windows will recreate it the next time you restart into MS-DOS mode.
