What about an HD6970. They can be had for less than $100 and have 2GB of RAM and are going to be a decent amount faster than an HD5870.

The drivers stopped being developed in 2014/2015, just like the HD 5000 series. I wouldn't suggest anything prior to the HD 7000 series if a person wants to play a game released after 2014.

Ok... I recommend going the Tesla route and getting Titan X performance for cheap-ish.

Ironically the Japanese $150 RX 550 LP cards that were just launched make alot of sense in light of RX 6500 xt and RTX 3050 launches.

Main pc: Asus ROG 17. R9 5900HX, RTX 3070m, 16gb ddr4 3200, 1tb NVME.
Retro PC: Soyo P4S Dragon, 3gb ddr 266, 120gb Maxtor, Geforce Fx 5950 Ultra, SB Live! 5.1

Everything above mentioned by swaaye plus price tax for "Oh my god, it has whopping 2 Gb of VRAM!". But to be fair, Linux open source drivers are better, but not by much.

This is what I have been doing for many years, not going crazy with the size and resolution of the monitor.
I have an R7 260x on a Core 2 Duo E6700 with a 1280x1024 17" monitor which is 1310720 pixels total. The newest thing I've played here at the moment is Crysis 2.
I have an HD 5870 on a phenom II X4 960T with a 1366x768 19" monitor which is 1049088 pixels total. The newest thing I've played here is Far Cry 3.
I have an HD6950 modified for HD6970 on a 1920x1080 22" monitor which is 2073600 pixels in total, with a Phenom II X6 1100T, I haven't played here for a long time, the last thing I played was Dragon Quest XI.
I have an RX580 on a 1920*1200 24" monitor which is 2304000 pixels total, with a Xeon E5 1620 V2.
And so on, I try to maintain a correct relationship between the GPU and the monitor.
And in short, I think that today it is the best solution, to sacrifice the size of the monitor in exchange for a less powerful GPU and less VRAM.
Years ago I had an HD7970 bought at the time of release and used it with a 17" 1280x1024 monitor, any game I played flew at that resolution with that graphics card.
I'm not going to go any further, I think most of the users of this forum will understand where I'm going.
There are users here playing on 17" or even 15" monitors, 😀

I've seen GTX 260, GTX 460, and HD 6670 going for reasonable 'old card' prices. Anything newer than that has a premium attached. It's not fun that the cost to upgrade has gone way up for most people. But really, there is a nearly infinite number of games that don't need anything newer than that anyway. I have more than a few games that I've bought and not even got around to playing yet, and more on the wish list. Meanwhile I'm playing a bit of Mount&Blade Warband (holy crap it actually lets me use my whole 1600x1200 screen!) which I already played a decade ago.

again another retro game on itch: https://90soft90.itch.io/shmup-salad

Cool, I've got some of the cards mentioned on a watch list to get idea of currant going rate.

I guess I can't complain, I've been ahead of the curve with retro hardware, it's hard to believe how much some of my AGP, 3dfx, etc cards are now worth.
but its still a bitter pill when you see similar era hardware like CPU's, motherboards, etc dropping in value like normal...but I've already got a stock of those DAMN IT!

HD5750 was the only reasonably priced option I found for my Athlon II build..

I have a hard time finding decent old cards for a decent price in the last year.

You can play older games at 1280x1024 or 1680x1050 if 1080p is too slow

Free shipping 🤣 better be, I want a limo to roll up, Daniel Craig in 007 suit to step out and have it in briefcase that's handcuffed to his wrist.

It would be fun to play around with a Volta GPU. 😀

Its not that they are in vogue ...

Thinking about it though, in true "Perfect Storm" fashion, just as crypto demand peaked, plague disruption hit, guess who was getting big into PC gaming after it was almost looking like dying out... Gen Z... all that Fortnite, LoL, Rocket League type stuff. Now these aren't the most demanding games, but they definitely put pressure on middle end availability.

Lockdowns and WFH did most of that pressure, all them people realising their PC wasn't able to cut the mustard ..yup demand went through the roof, and then the clouds, supply then went through the floor due to the plague and retailers quickly realised that consumers will happily lap their scalping up, they wont be happy about it but they do pay.

You can buy Titan V. Usually sold cheaper than MSRP (which was 3000$ in 2017).

That's pretty much what I'm thinking, and younger generations (mine and younger) also tend to not be as stingy about spending and are much more comfort driven than previous generations. And that's me putting it nicely.

I'm just wondering how many households would bother upgrading the videocard in their desktop. I've rarely seen households nowadays with desktop computers and even then if they had them I don't think they would be upgrading them even with the pandemic, the amount that do has to be a drop in the bucket. My relatives look at me like I'm crazy when I gift them a laptop. It sure would have been nice to grow up and even now live in a community that cared about computers maybe its just me and everyone else lives in a desktop utopia.

I'm not sure what your budget is but here's an anecdote. I bought a used Zotac 1080 Ti in mid 2019 for $580.00 USD (MSRP $699). It's a little smaller than other similar cards which was ideal for me since it's living in an OEM midtower and just barely fits.

Today, almost 3 years later, the same used card is going for between $600 and $700 USD on eBay. While that's still a lot, and it should be lower considering all the newer cards that have come out since then... it is still a great price/performance ratio in my opinion. The card performs extremely well with a 3.6Ghz 4c/8t Haswell (2014) at 2K/60 and even 4K/60 depending on the title.

Just sharing an experience. Cheers. 😀
