Howdy. Back in the day i had a P3 450Mhz with a voodoo 3 that lasted me for years that i loved so the whole 3dfx logo and look is super nostalgic for me. As such I've collected a few cards I'd love to build computers around:

Voodoo 2 8mb

Voodoo Banshee PCI

Voodoo 3 AGP

Voodoo 5 AGP

I want to use them all in builds but the only one in working on now is a P3 Tualatin 1.4Ghz for the Voodoo 5.

What build specs would you recommend for each of the others? I have all kinds of other video (pci, agp) and sound (isa, pci) cards to match up with them. I have a variety of CPUs and platforms and would buy whatever in missing.

Thanks in advance!!

My silly ideas, in order:

440LX + Celeron 300A (not quite P2, but V2 8mb's not quite the V2 12mb either)

PCChips + Cyrix 6x86MX-PR200 (imagine a tight budget scenario for this one)

VIA MVP3 + K6-2 400-500 (Common combination, shouldn't hurt to bump up to K62+ or K6-III)

Pentium III 1.4g...oh you're already good on that one. Period accuracy on that one could just mean taking the P3 down a notch to 2000 levels (867-1GHz)

Let number 2 stretch it's legs a bit, M571 and a MII 366 or so... with a socket A cooler on top so you can hit 300Mhz+

All intel I'd have gone PII-300, PII-450, PIII-600 and 1Ghz or better.
All AMD I'd have gone K6-266to333, K6-2-450, K6 2/3+ 600, Thunderbird 1Ghz or better. Or move #3 to #2 and stick a 600-800Mhz duron in there.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

I have a Monster Fuzion Banshee coming from Kiev and from what I can tell its a bit faster than the normal Banshee and I feel a K62/3+ 300 - 500 system would suit it perfectly, would suit a pair of Voodoo2s in SLI perfectly too. So many great period correct combos can be made for the Voodoo1 - Voodoo 3 Era, Voodoo4 & 5 are a bit easier since a Pentium III or Athlon XP system suits them both just fine.

Now that I think about it a nice Duron setup would work well with the Voodoo 4, I dont have a Duron yet perhaps I should look into getting one.

Lets see;

Voodoo II / Banshee = 1998

Celeron 300A/333
Pentium II Deschutes (250nm) 266MHz - 450MHz
K6-2

Memory; 64 - 128MiB

Voodoo 3 = 1999

Celeron 366 - 500
Pentium III 450 - 800EB
K6-III
Athlon 500 - 750

Memory; 128 - 256MiB

Voodoo 5 = 2000

Celeron 533 - 766
Pentium III 850 - 1133
Pentium IV 1.4/1.5
K6-2+/K6-III+
Duron 600 - 800
Athlon 800 - 1200C

Memory; 256 - 384MiB

I'm not knowledgable when it comes to sound, I'll let someone else talk about that.

If you're going with Win98se then 128GB of storage is about the limit. Get an SSD with IDE to SATA adapter or CF cards with IDE to CF adapter (though CF is more expensive than SSD).

Rig for my voodoo 3 3000 is as follows:
P3 slot 1 katmai 600mhz
asus p2b-s 440bx board
sounds blaster live
256mb pc100
20gb quantum fireball

Been a pretty solid rig so far.

Voodoo 2 8mb and Voodoo Banshee are somewhat similar in performance.
Maybe put one of the cards in a K6-2/500 and the other in a Mendocino 500?
Could also use something like a Cyrix MII 400GP (@300Mhz) or a P1 MMX (233MHz or overclocked slightly to 250Mhz on 100MHz FSB) instead of either K6-2 or Mendocino.
There's a lot of different CPUs to choose from from 200MHz to 500MHz. You seem to have ample cards so you should have the room to experiment.

Voodoo 3 AGP I used one in a Celeron 800 build, but I'd say anything from 500MHz to 1GHz should be fine (and not even limited to this).

Voodoo 5 AGP you already have in a build which seems fine to me. I'd probably have picked a Tualatin 1.4GHz myself.

I'm somewhat impartial about sound cards, I'd probably just stick one in there (picked somewhat randomly or one that I'm curious about perhaps) and see how things sound 😜

But me personally I'd probably go for something like this if I were to build 4 systems around these cards right now:
- Voodoo 2 8MB Mendocino s370 440LX (anything from 400MHz to 533MHz) Trio3D AGP or maybe even one of the really early Ati AGP cards, the idea being to allow the Voodoo 2 to do most of the 3D work with the crappy AGP card needing only do basic desktop stuff.
- Banshee PCI ss7 with K6-x (plus or non-plus) 400+MHz or perhaps even a Cyrix MII-400GP running at 300MHz(is a very minor overclock which it should be able to do, I don't have any of the 433GP ones). I already made a single Voodoo 2 K6-3 build so I wouldn't want to use the Voodoo 2 in a similar build again. Unsure about the chipset I would want to pick.
- Voodoo 3 Coppermine 700MHz up to 1GHz (prefering a Coppermine on the lower end of this spectrum to make it just a bit easier to silence the cooling) or perhaps even a VIA V3 Nehemiah 1GHz up to 1.2GHz. I wouldn't want to use a Celeron 100MHz FSB CPU for a second time for a Voodoo 3 build and with few real alternatives it would probably be either Coppermine or Nehemiah. i815 chipset preferably.
- Voodoo 5 Tualatin 1400 is what I would put it in.

As OS I'd pick WinME in all 4 builds 🤣

put the 8mb voodoo 2 in your crappyest build. It could be at least good replacement for a voodoo 1 with better performance.

Until Quake 3 and all the games that use the engine, the 8MB pretty much did the same as the 12MB, then basically the 8MB gave the 12MB a 1 year premonition of what texture thrash looked like. However, if you really wanna play those games, the popular ones have had lightweight textures created, so you can get decent speed for an eyecandy drop. But yeah, it's the "worst" card of the group so should go in the "worst" system.

When I figure out what happened to my Diamond Monster II 8MB I think I'm going to put it in a 440LX board along with my best 66 Mhz CPU, maybe a PII-266 but possibly a mendocino Celeron on a slotket. Then because Alienware did it, ima pair it with my i740... and see if there was a particular advantage in doing that (Other than maybe intel gave them a cents on the dollar deal because they weren't moving 🤣 )

Thanks so much for the replies everyone! Lots of interesting stuff to research!

Sadly i don't have any AMD processors. I have tons of P1, PII & PIII combos though

I wanted to get a K6-2+ or K6-3 maybe + but those procs are really hard to find for me. If anyone has any leads in all ears (I'm on the east coast USA).

My only non-Intel CPU is a Cyrix 6x86 PR200-GP and it's in my most obscure weirdo computer: Asus Media Bus build with a PII-P55T2P4 mobo with a matching Asus AV264 Vibra16/Mach64 VT combo card. I suppose the voodoo2 might actually be a good fit into this? I might get a Cyrix MKII in here. It just seems like a waste not to pair the voodoo2 with an ISA SoundBlaster.

Any good recommendations for a video card match for the V2? Maybe a good d3d card power those games or is it not worth it for that era? I was thinking a PCI GeForce 2 MX or something.

Thanks as always everyone
