So when looking for ic's on ebay, I automatically exclude items from you know where. Doing 1 search for 68000/68008 and related ic's just moments ago, something turned up that although didn't ship from china, was made there. Alright specifying country of origin doesn't mean the parts couldn't have been made somewhere else, this is clear. But it just makes me wonder if anything we buy these days is anything but chinese made. And the uncertainty makes me a little sick, to the degree I want nothing whatsoever to do with mail order parts. There is a category of stuff that's sometimes out there that's so specialized, you can be pretty sure the stuff is original. But not your 80x86, 680x0, etc. Stuff.

There was a discussion about this on a different forum sometime ago. It was revealed that these shops will go to any lenghts to "create" (???) or refurbish old parts to make them look new. I was wondering if anyone on this board has any specific insights.into this.

If you find a western seller who has a few specific parts for sale, photographed, old date codes, not a multi-item listing, and who hasn't been copying that same listing from previous sales, then you can have some confidence that the parts in the picture are exactly the ones you're getting.
Sellers like that usually don't have great prices though, partly because theyre going to the bother of selling something they only have a few of.

If there are previous sales look for feedback that says anything informative, but usually people don't comment on those details. If somebody is excited thinking the parts are brand new it might be a bad sign. If people are complaining they're dirty or dusty, they might be vintage.

I've bought some EPROMs from China a few times and they've been fine, but I've certainly seen the stories of bogus chips being "made" and I suppose it may be more common with some other types of parts.
