So, ive put together a system using spare parts I had sitting around simply out of boredom. It has an AMD Sempron 2400+ @1.67ghz, 512mb ram. tho the gpu turned out to be faulty. Unfortunate, in was a Geforce MX 4000 i think. Anyway, i thought I would make a post here to see what graphics card you all would pair with an AMD Sempron 2400+ as id like a working system. Maybe it could run Win95 OSR2.5? if so, maybe id use it for Win95 gaming. Let me know your thoughts, and thanks in advance!

Far too fast for anything before 98SE/ME, indeed even early XP would be a good fit for it. Your 512MB of RAM will be problematic with 9x without patching anyway.

As for GPU perhaps a high-end Geforce 4, or possibly a middling 9000 series Radeon, like a 9600xt.

9600xt or 9800 XXL/XT would be a great fit, a FX 5700 Ultra or FX 5800 would work well for a GeForce GPU

Windows 98SE supports up to 512 MB RAM natively.

It only needs third-party patches if you go over that amount.

There is no advantage to using Win95 instead of Win98 on a fast system like that.

You only get downsides like worse driver support and the inability to install DirectX 9.

Your Sempron 2400+ is exactly an Athlon XP 2000+ from spec point of view.
(an athlon 2000+ with little FSB boost...)

For the VGA's, i agree with previous post, a Geforce 4 MX for budget or Geforce 4 Ti for higher demands...

It does, but that includes addressing GPU memory as well.

What's your source on that?

For the record, I have used a Win98 system with 512 MB RAM together with a 128 MB GeForce4 for years without any issues.

I have a windows 98SE system already, and a Windows XP system. My 98 system booted just fine with 764mb of memory. I may consider the FX 5000 series suggestions, Ive seen FX5500's for around $50 on ebay, vs Radeon 9600's for a bit higher, i think $75 range. As for OS, being the hardware is the same age as my Windows 98SE system, I may do something like WinME or 2000.

Personally I'd probably use something like a GF4, FX5700+, perhaps GF6600, Radeon 9600. OS WinME or WinXP with <SP3.
I might actually go with Win2k as suggested above, since it's more of a throwtogether rig anyway 😋 and 2k isn't a standard pick for me.
RAM at least 256MB depending on what smaller modules I have laying around (rloew patch used if needed) or 1GB if WinXP.
Harddrive I'd probably throw some spare 40GB IDE drive in there or something. Sound card whatever I have laying around (probably a Live!) but I'd probably settle for on-board if only because of having something different.

Heh, I thinki I'd actually go with Win2k on this one 🤣
