I’ve pretty well explored most of the fastest amd and nvidia pci options for my k6-3+ builds but what’s the fastest for matrox? Did they ever make anything faster than a ATI 7500? Being as the 7500 is my best card for these builds I’m wondering if there may be something better than it from matrox.

Fastest in what regard ?

DOS (VGA) performance ?

Direct3D or OpenGL acceleration ?

AFAICR, their last PCI (not PCI Express) solutions were the G450/G550 variants . The 3D performance is in the same ballpark as a Geforce2 MX200 according to http://ixbtlabs.com/articles/g550/index.html. And a Geforce 2 MX200 is no match for a Radeon 7500, at least in this benchmark https://www.anandtech.com/show/872/6 .

The reason to get matrox is vga (analog) video quality. Once you are past the g200/g250 the only reason to use matrox is multi-monitor.

also "fastest" card changes with EVERY game. It hardly matters, imho. Get something reliable with good compatibility is my advice.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

I have a pci-x parhelia which will work just fine in a pci slot, pretty sure it would be faster than the g550.

That said the 450max was faster than the 550.

have you ever stuck that in a 430hx mobo? if not, could you? I'd be very curious to know if it would work in my tyan s1564

I would have to check what boards I have, not sure I have a 430hx but I’m sure I could find something close.

G450 PCI was the last PCI card from Matrox for normies. G550 PCI don't have normal DVI or VGA.

They are all more or less identical in that regard after G200.

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.
