I want to use some external midi modules with my Soundblaster AWE32, a Roland Sound Canvas/MT32/yamaha xg midi among some others.

In control panel/multimedia I see "Creative Music Synth [220]" and "SB Awe32 MIDI Synth [620]"

In device manager there's no MPU401 or external midi device.

In AWE32 control panel the Synth/Device section there is a "SB AWE32 MIDI Synth ]620] and the "Allow MPU401 Emluation on this device" button can be checked but will not save/stay checked.

Any input on my output problem?

Can you display how the resources are set for the AWE32 through Device Manager? Apparently the MPU-401 isn't enabled on the sound card which should have the I/O address of 330h.

The MFBEN jumper was set wrong. I assumed this was a plug-and-play AWE32 but apparantly a lot of settings are jumper controlled.

I looked over it briefly before installing it and didnt' see any labeled jumpers for IRQ/DMA/IO/MPU/etc. and it "just worked" so I figured I was good to go.

The MFBEN jumper is for whether allowing MPU-401 emulation or not thru the EMU8K with AWEUTIL. Has nothing to do with the actual MPU-401 compatible interface that can be used thru the gameport.

Since your AWE32 is PnP, you should adjust the resources in Device Manager. There is also the "Settings based on:" combobox that you could try changing because some of them doesn't have the MPU-401 I/O address available or even the AdLib port which is 388h. I recommend setting "Basic Configuration 0001" for this if it isn't set.

Ok, I incorrectly assumed that yours was PnP. Should have asked that before. 😜

Now that you can set the MPU-401 I/O address (must be thru jumpers), is there a third MIDI device in Control Panel/Multimedia?

For DOS games within Windows, "Allow MPU401 Emulation on this device" which is found in AWE Control Panel > "Device.." must be unchecked in order to use external MIDI devices (and the WaveBlaster).

yeah it looks good now. I'll test out with some external modules, they're all hooked up to my 386 SBPRO testing softmpu right now...
