I was searching up graphics cards that I can use for my Windows 98 which im trying to keep in the early 2000's, and stumbled upon an unreleased 6000 version of a Voodoo 5.

My question is, is there any graphics card that looks and runs better than the 6000 from 2002, if not, where on earth can I get one?

I think, although most people here would love a Voodoo5 6000, that most people would also admit that Nvidia/Amd’s 2002 flagship cards would be better overall.

Check out DOSBox Distro:

a lightweight Linux distro (tinycore) which boots off a usb flash drive and goes straight to DOSBox.

Geforce 4, Radeon 9700

even a geforce 2 is faster than a V5 6000, there's no reason to get one apart from a collectable standpoint and historical reasons :p
and simple answer is, you can't.
it's a highly collectible card that was never released retail and trades for immense sums, you can get a reproduction made in russia though and even that will cost you like over $1k

Thanks for the suggestion, a Radeon 9700 could be a good choice since its 128 mb like the 6000, and it's not an incredibly ridiculous price.

I wouldn't get a Geforce 4 since it's 64 mb like my Geforce 2 mx 400, and actually runs incredibly slow for early 2000s games, so it's uncomparable to a Voodoo 5.

Pci or agp?

If agp then 9800 pros are easy to find compatibility is good too.

If pci then 7500 pci best or 9200 pro second best.

At lease these have been what I’ve had good luck with on socket 7/ss7

Geforce4 4600TI’s have 128mb. The geforce4 MX your thinking off is nothing more than a tweaked Geforce2.

Would agp be better supported?

From 2002? You could go 2000-2001 🤣

Geforce2 Ultra
Radeon 7500
KYRO II 4500

so yes

I'm trying to keep it around the same year as my pentium 3

From a collection point of view that model would have an high value for the story itself of its period. But from a real gaming target for the titles the card would have been oriented to, most others 2002/2003 video cards would be much more than enough and be compatible also with Directx8/9 games. And considering how many video card models existed in those times, if the target is to build an everyday gaming machine there're so many cheap options already mentioned above.

True, I think I might go with an nvidia card.

How would recreating it cost $1000 if there are cards now that are about 1000x faster.

7500 and 8500 are very hard to find for me. Decent choices of Rage 128 Pro, 9200 and 9600 all AGP, x800 is getting harder to get due to price.

Nvidia: MX400, GTS and MX440/460 and 4200 Ti are easier to get. FX5600 and 5900 are somewhat easy but getting very expensive.

Cheers,

The x800 isn't too pricey and had good amount of memory

Also ATi had many very good solutions in those times, probably one of their best period. Beside the final frame rate which might differ a lot from card to card, for early 2001 to 2003 period, I like the Radeon 8500 and 9500/9700 cards. They were fast enough and with many features. Of course it depends on the games and it might be useful to look for old cards reviews or ask in the forum which PC game would be the main target of the machine.

About the modern version of the 6000 and also other cards recreated, I suppose the cost could not easily be low cause looks like impressively complex projects to even design on paper not to mention find someone actually build them, I suppose in limited final build numbers. But like other similar projects I imagine more oriented to people that have a specific passion for that specific idea/hardware. I'd like to see many more of these modern hardware creation cause even cards that didn't exist can be designed for old hardware in a different layout.

Try searching on ebay with this 7500 and 8500, ditto 9700 that dies. Very few and tend to be expensive.

idk where to even begin with this one 😁

...but I will try:
- sourcing an original V5 6000 to base the design off
- reverse engineer the original card
- engineering a new schematic and board and getting them manufactured probably going through multiple iterations on a small scale
- sourcing the components, especially the 3Dfx chips
- software developement to make them actually work
there are so many hours involved in a project like that and it's a tiny production run, of course it's expensive.

also you know you can reply to multiple posts with one reply, right?
I'm not sure if we're being trolled or not.
