The only thing that made it particularly profitable to mine in China was by performing most of the mining concentrated near cheap energy sources, such as coal and hydro plants.
Scattered mining can be done anywhere in the world by individuals, particularly by people who live in sunny regions and can afford solar panels. Compared to centralized coal-powered crypto-mining, I guess that would be much preferable, both for the environment and in terms of decentralization. 🙂
