After the FMV intro (which stutters on my PC for some reason) and at the Speed Busters splash screen, the game crashes and goes back to the desktop menu.

I have DirectX 9.0c and the latest drivers installed for everything except for my Nvidia GPU which I have the 45.23 version and don't understand why this is happening.

My specs:
CPU: Intel Pentium III 733MHz
MB: MSI MS-6153 Socket 370
RAM: 256MB PC133
GPU 1: Nvidia GeForce3 Ti 500 64MB
GPU 2: 3DFX Voodoo2 8MB
AUDIO: Sound Blaster Live! CT4830

If you look at some of the other threads on VOGONS, it looks like the large patch (spbaddon.exe) can break the game for some users on at least some OSes. Some people also seem to think that the game has issues on higher-speed processors (i.e., 2 GHz and faster), but this is not likely an issue for you.

Have a look at this thread: Speed Busters in XP SP2

If you are using the spbaddon.exe patch, you might try not using it or apply the small patch afterwards as VirtuaIceMan suggests.

Would it help if I downgraded my CPU to a Pentium I or II?

You didn't mention the OS? I had the game running fine with DxWnd without any patches last year on XPSP1.

Thread title says Win98 SE.

The speed issues seem to affect machines much faster than yours, so probably not.

You didn't mention which GPU you were trying to use. Both of your GPUs could conceivably run the game, so can you choose between them in the graphics settings, and do the results differ?

Tired both, same result.😔 I even tried lowering the game's graphics.

I might try out DxWnd, thanks!

I guess I am blind... unfortunately DxWnd doesn't run in Windows 98SE...

On my end the game had an history of not working on multiple setups, I think I fixed once by removing the second GPU with many other changes (using an older chipset driver). I don't have an experience with MSI boards so I can't tell how things are different here.

I don't know if it matters, but I played Speed Busters on Win98 when it first came out and I definitely wasn't using DirectX 9. I had DX 6 or 7. I was also using a Riva TNT with a much older driver.

I'm thinking about downgrading my CPU and GPU 1 (keeping the Voodoo2) just to play Windows games from 1995-2000.

What was your CPU?

Athlon 550 IIRC. I see GOG and Ubisoft listing the minimum CPU as 1.8 GHz which is ridiculous. Nobody had a 1.8 GHz CPU before 2001.

Those are probably the requirements for the GOG-DX wrapper they probably added

So having a second GPU breaks the game?

I don't mean a second GPU breaks the game. It is one of the many things I tried together in an attempt to run the game. Naturally in such helpless conditions, you wouldn't start going back to look for what is the problem.

I tried the running the game on my Windows 10 and it starts up without crashing (only without audio input), but the game runs too fast thus, the CPU is the culprit.

Guess I'll have to resort to drowngrading my CPU on my 98SE. I'd rather play old games running and funtioning at 30fps and under then them running too fast where it's unplayable or crashing.

Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire is another example of that issue.

Games running fast on Windows is because of the lack of working V-sync in DirectDraw or GDI, in the case DirectDraw.

Speed Busters is another game to add to the pile of incompatible Windows 95 games then.......

Game is running fast doesn't mean it is incompatible. That's a reason why wrappers exist, to replace an non-working FPS cap supplied by new DDraw. dgVoodoo2, DxWnd, ddwrapper can cap the frame rate and make them run at a normal speed. Even games such as Descent 2, which have problems in DOS version running the game on a fast CPU, the Windows 95 version works properly when capped to 60FPS.

I have the game on Windows 11, I will try it sometime.
