A buddy of mine saved this Permedia 2 from the scrap pile and gave it to me some time ago:

Fair use/fair dealing exception

I initially dismissed it as a professional OpenGL card and put it in storage. However, after recently watching a video on this card, I realized that it was actually capable of running games. It's really slow and seems to have rendering issues in certain games, but that's kinda expected from a 1997 3D accelerator that isn't a Voodoo. On the plus side, it seems to support paletted textures so that's something I suppose.

PC#1: Pentium MMX 166 / Soyo SY-5BT / S3 Trio64V+ / Voodoo1 / YMF719 / AWE64 Gold / SC-155
PC#2: AthlonXP 2100+ / ECS K7VTA3 / Voodoo3 / Audigy2 / Vortex2
PC#3: Athlon64 3400+ / Asus K8V-MX / 5900XT / Audigy2
PC#4: i5-3570K / MSI Z77A-G43 / GTX 970 / X-Fi

an interesting example of early 3d cards to have in the collection!

I am delighted to contribute to this topic. I managed to save this beautiful flat screen aquarium from the scrapyard.

My brother had one of these, the older version, the Vision Master Pro 450. One day, he decided it was a good idea to hold a fairly strong magnet close to the screen. Well, you can degauss all you want, but the stain remained. The monitor was only a few months old. Big oof....

My Craigslist Score for the week; Antec 900 case with an i5 4590, Gigabyte motherboard, 16 gigs of DDR3, Corsair power supply. Oddly, this case has the PSU on the bottom, but there's no air vent on the bottom of the case.

Nice score, the case is decent and the innards are pretty good too. Though I guess you want another couple of hundred watts in there to run any kind of worthwhile GPU.

It seems a bit like one of the cases I have, but there's some difference in the top molding, so not sure if I've got a clone or a diff model of same series or what. I am somehow totally frigging blind to case model numbers and makes.

That's a beautiful case and the components inside are solid as well. It'll make a serviceable gaming machine.

Considering we're on 11th generation, it doesn't surprise me anymore.

Even if I'm fully aware Ivy Bridge and Haswell are quite potent platforms.

I'm only seeing Core2 given/thrown around here so far. Though I guess one anomaly was a few years back, I got a sandy bridge Pentium notebook that was only a couple of years old, because the HDD was screwed up. That still seems useable now, with 8GB in it. Also has had the least problem with win 10 updates of anything in the house, and has a TPM module so might be coaxed to install 11 🤣 .... though I guess another reason it might have been discarded is it has a wifi card that argues with some routers, goes on and off all the time... it's fine on mine... but at a relatives house it's a real pig for it.

5xxx series Intel aren't that well represented in the wild, so if you don't count them in you're right. 😁
If you do, then there are 12 generations of Core i$.

Yes. My only concern was how it might have been a waste of my time and gasoline since I couldn't be sure it would still be there, but I got lucky. No doubt I'll no longer get things like this for free when I move to a more rural area in a state in the midwest, so I have to take advantage while I can.

Um... isn't that Haswell Refresh you're referring to? The original Haswell is 4xxx, not 5xxx.

EDIT: Slightly stupid me. Haswell + Haswell Refresh are both 4xxx. Broadwell is the 5th generation, though I haven't seen it being given too much attention, to the point I wondered why Intel jumped from 4xxx to 6xxx with the Skylake arch.

Haswell refresh was 4x90 I believe. 5xxx is Broadwell.

Outside of HEDT and the two Core CPUs that included eDRAM (Core i7 5775C and i5 5675C), Broadwell was uncommon for consumer desktop platforms.

To make things more complicated, Intel chose to name the HEDT lineup for Broadwell the 6xxx series. Oh me lord ... Marketing dep really did it again. Same goes for the other generations.

Craigslist freebie: a 2011 Macbook Pro. No charger included, so I'll have to buy one to find out if it works. Wish me luck.

I bought a $20.00 knockoff charger from Amazon, and it worked! I reset the password so I could log on, but the original 5,400 RPM drive was slow when new, and the years since haven't helped, so I installed a 256 gigabyte Sandisk SSD I had salvaged from a different free computer only to face the difficulty of installing a Mac OS. After much fooling around, and failed attempts to do it by downloading a .dmg and using TransMac to make a bootable USB image, I connected an ethernet cable and booted up to the network and it installed Lion. Lion is now so old that you cannot get a secure browser, so I updated it in stages and have stopped at High Sierra. It only has four gigabytes of DDR3, so I have ordered more memory.

Random head-canon, I call everything after Haswell "Gravy lake", as in, keep pumping out the same old, same old to keep the gravy train running 🤣

But I guess recent gens stepped up the game a bit again.
