Okay, what took me a long time to see.

Yeah the left and right of the socket has an extra row of holes than the cpu has pins.

I was really confused since it felt like that one pin was stopping the cpu going into the socket but it just needed a good push. Especially confusing since the k6 just fell into the socket with little pressure.

Sorry for being an idiot.

Use a razor to straighten the pins. Never push it in.

Yeah there is a key pin that will prevent some cpus from inserting into socket 5 but socket 7 should allow insertion.

Unless I am remembering wrong which I may. It has been a while since I looked into this pin.

I reprinted the fan mount with an edit and i printed another mount for the upper left hand corner.

It may be a bit silly but honestly so few holes lined up that the weight of the VRM heatsinks pushed down enough to make the left side of the board touch the backplate.

Thank goodness for my 3d printer.

I also hook the fans up to an old Nzxt fan controller i have kicking around from the mid 2000s. Sliders on fan controllers and zalman CPU coolers really define the era of the core 2 for me.

I still remember seeing alien ware machine for the first time and it was before dell took them over and made them complete trash.

I also got a strange cooler master heatsink from that time that i can't find much information about. I found hints saying that it came with a case and very few were made. I'll have to take pictures of it at some point, maybe someone knows what it is.

Socket 7 coolers usually vent out the clip side. May wanna think about changing heatsinks

I'm going to mess around with updating the bios today as well as trying something stupid so I may use cd-rws.
If it works, it'll be quite funny.

Amazingly strapping a hd-dvd drive to the socket 7 didn't work 😂

Worth a try at least.

If it was sata that’s why it didn’t work.

Hey hey hey, the computer even boots to it!

I modded a a m/s select jumper onto my sata to ide, I also switched to using the correct setting since previously I had both the CF card and sata to ide set to master

EDIT: the spot where I put the jumper headers was previously an empty jumper header wired to a pin on the MCU labelled PORn, power on reset, with an innocent n which is used as a remote power switch.
I cut the trace to the PORn and wired it to mssel but before realising that I need a pull up resistor to operating voltage which comes from the 1.8v regulator.

So leave high for slave and pull low with the jumper for master.

I don't know why the board decided not to include that by default.

The tag ram mod didn't work.

I tried both with the resistor in place and removed. The pc still boots but the cache value doesn't change

EDIT: Looking at images of other peoples boards I noticed they can select the level 2 cache size option but I can't. I think I'll try modding the bios to let me click that option. I thought it was just a heads up display or something.

Yeah, I found that a blast of a blow torch lighter made the epoxy soft like butter, so I just cut it off with a hobby knife.

Really careful with the fumes tho.
IIRC it releases cyanide, not high concentration but I really don't think there's a safe amount.

I did not know this. Well at least i wasn't trying to burn it, just warm it up and that's all it needed.
Probably not as bad.

I modded the bios in modbin, set the l2 cache to 512, rebooted and it posted.

Does that mean that it worked?

EDIT: it would be awesome if it worked

I don't have more than 64mb of but that's the result screen if it tells you anything.

"Cachechk" and other tools won´t tell you the cacheable RAM size for L1 and L2. You need "ctcm7" for that. But as long as you have only 64 MB RAM populated it will just tell you the cacheable size is 64MB.
You´ll have to go for more RAM!

In case you don´t have it - here you go:

Filename
ctcm17a.zip
File size
97.59 KiB
Downloads
35 downloads
File license
Fair use/fair dealing exception

Okay then,

Any amount above 64mb or something?
I can probably just get 2 32mb ram cards and toss them in, it would bring me to 96mb in that case

I currently have 4 16mb ram cards.

CF to ide adapter
NZXT fan controller
HD-DVD rom drive
3.5inch floppy
limited edition SFRKC30 Gotek with STM32F105, only 100 exist
SD to IDE in a very user unfriendly position.

Now there's a combination.
A very stupid combination but knowing that this thing can boot from the hd-dvd rom drive just makes me smile. Unfortunately the blue laser in the drive is dead so no booting dos from a blu-ray disk today.

The 430HX MCH only knows the two operational modes "(reduced) cacheable area 64MB" and "enhanced cacheable area 512MB".
If ctcm7 confirms a 96MB cacheable area I think we´re safe to say the MCH is in enhanced mode. It probably wouldn´t enter this mode if not all 3 additional Tag-IO lines were active.
Assumed BIOS sets the correct registers...
Was the 64/512 switch a hidden option you just enabled in Modbin or did you have to create it?

Oh cool, I didn’t know there was a mod to make the cd roms work on the adapters.

I’m really hoping that the cache mod works!!! Fingers crossed!!

If I understand this right, this even helps on a k6-3+ but since a k6-3+ Almost entirely fixes the problem, the improvement may be quite small. And on many of these boards it may be actually ruined by the fact that sometimes mobo cache being enabled actually makes it slower. Or did I get that wrong, does it still use the tag chips if you disable mobo cache?

I highly suspect that a k6-3+ will find its way into this board haha. Mad science a little, may as wepl mad science it all the way.

Good job modding the bios.

There is a seller on ebay selling 60ns 128mb simms kinda pricy, but I use them and they work well.
