Hi,

Little idea for discussion, with sky rocketing elec. bills

Watts, how low can you go....

9.5w.. wyse c90le : vuzix iwear vr920 + earbuds not very practical, like looking down a tunnel but works across all platforms

Second attempt more practical.

22.5w.. wyse v10le : vuzix iwear video headphones with earbuds, hd screen, works from bios screen onwards. Requires DVI to hdmi adaptor,

Using the headsets as a dumb screen, knocks of about 20w over a full size monitor

Will follow with pics later..

I Like Charity Shops, they're like steam and GOG but cheaper.

Windows 7 - HP730 Air cooled, 8Gb, GT1030
Windows 98se - Wyse V10LE 1.2Ghz, 1 Gb, 16Gb SSD
Windows 98se - Compaq Evo 550d SSF, P4 2Ghz, 1Gb, 60Gb(Partitioned)
Dos 6.2 - HP7510 512Mb, 4Gb

What is the idea here.. Seems u want to reduce ur electrical bill or torture urself ?!?! the world is at collaps these days it sucks, and seems everyone will pay more and get less shit happens...
If someone want to reduce by alot their bills, first dont take shower every day, but once in a week, or maybe every day for 2 minutes... And also never use retro HW, as they are not power efficient.. And any Intel and nVIDIA current gen parts should be banned, die to them being bigger stoves/ power hogs then the AMD ones...

Mah systems retro, old, newer (Radical stuff)

K7 2.6/ NF7-S/ HD3850

Computer even vintage hardly use power. If you invest in both LCD monitor and TV that are LED-backlight together at same time, you'll notice in hydro bill and less heat during summer.
Sleep the computer and turn off monitor manually when not in use (windows XP, 7 and 10, 11).
GPUs cards has low clock in normal windows use, again very little power that some of them turns off fans.
Replace hard drive with SSD, less heat and increased performance.

Any notebooks with good specs new enough have much better power management and plug into wall socket for power brick when need to recharge battery or in use attached.

Call your TV provider to replace them if your receiver is too old. Before that, they were about 40W to 60W, now power supply says 18W, could be around 15W each tops for our latest bell receivers.

Cheers,

Great Northern aka Canada.

Was that directed at me? You quoted me.

Found vintage PC's where heavy on power for very little horsepower, but nothing compared with modern gaming PC's now with cards over 1000w???, even hearing crypto miners are shutting down due to costs.

UK never been cheap. Shareholders fleecing us chronic.

There are no 1000w GPUs .. yet

450watts is the rated draw for the 3090ti and the coming 4090ti is rumored to be around 500 - 600watts, AMD however is going MCM and is trying their best to increase GPU processing power without increasing wattage so their new GPUs will be roughly on par or lower wattage than their RX6000 series is.

AMD is focusing on energy efficiency as GPUs have now gotten to the point where they are using obnoxious amounts of power and are causing heat issues for more than just the GPU.
Nvidia however is still pushing more wattage and die space over MCM and efficiency, hopefully AMD and MCM can show nVidia the error of their ways and force them to once again focus on lowering the wattage of their GPUs.

I for one do not ever want 100o watts GPUs .. my current daily driver PC is already a damn space heater, the 3080ti throws out more heat then my room can handle and I have to run AC in winter to keep the PC happy.

Ok, recommended psu wattage,

Missis complaining about bill sky rocketing, retired my egpu, 200w going more retro gaming, svga..

Actually shame, Nvidia has the lowest and highest wattage, not much get lower than the gt xx30's

Already here. Some special 3090 Ti consume around 900W and spike over 1kW.

Not like you can, in regular setup anyway. There's only so much you can draw from one wall socket.

Well with 15 amp 240v wall sockets I have over 3000 watts available at the wall, not every country is stuck with anemic US power delivery. The limiting factor is mostly the PSU and the cord supplying the power from the wall, top of the line PSUs are 1600watts but you need a heavy duty power lead which only fits the 15amp wall sockets here and it gets hot as hell when loaded and you cant be pulling 1600watts from the wall for extended periods due to that heating.

As for the 1000watts GPUs . .yea the special LN2 3090ti Kingpin GPU from EVGA can do that but they are hardly normal GPUs and I dont think they are even available outside of invitation or stupidly deep pockets.

Yeah, but that's one third of your limit chomped by just one GPU. Now imagine two of these in SLI =P

The limiting factor is mostly the PSU

Exactly, most reputable PSU manufacturers had to include peasant USA electric system too, as lowest denominator.

And 10 years ago there were jokes that GTX 480 were effing microwave ovens. Good times.

mhm ..but ya know how Jensen is, if it aint pushing wattage then its not a big enough number. 900 is bigger than 450 afterall 😜

Two 4090ti's in NVLink ?

hmm I dont think I can find a PSU with enough spare wattage to do that .. even the AX1600i isnt enough, which makes me wonder just how PSU fabs are going to work around that limit.

Perhaps GPUs need to have external power bricks so the PSU doesnt need to supply the wattage anymore. (3DFX did this with the Voodoo5 6000 which needed a external power brick to even work)

ASUS provided external power bricks for Radeon X1800XT TOP and GeForce 7800GT Dual.
