I've just gotten DOSBox 7 to play Celtic Tales. In earlier versions of DOSBox, I had a lot of problem running the game, but in 7 it runs quite smoothly, with good speed, too. After a short session, I was quite happy and closed DOSBox, but when I try to run it again a few hours later, the game became incredibly choppy.

To be specific, the game slows down and the MIDI gets choppy whenever I move the mouse cursor. I had been running the game at 3000 cycles and 0 frame skip, and every other setting is DOSBox default (I didn't touch any config file). I have a Centrino Duo 1.6Ghz, and my task manager shows that DOSBox is far from using its full power. I've tried jacking the CPU cycles up to 10000+ and frame skip to 10, but that didn't help at all. I'm simply at loss at what caused this drastic change.

Any idea what could be the cause and how I can fix it?

No idea what caused it (besides you changed the dosbox configuration
or installed some programs like antivirus apps or similar).

But try core=dynamic and cycles=max and see if it's smooth then.
You can manually decrease the cycles then as well.
