I just bought a Radeon 9600 (supposedly Pro) and it was pretty hard to find in my country, but after the purchase I researched some time, and found out that supposedly Powercolor cheated with this card, I heard that the card is not a 9600Pro and yes an overclocked 9600, now I'm afraid I bought it.

The clocks are 400 for GPU and 400 for RAM, from the photos you can see that it doesn't use BGA memories, but SOC, it has a total of 256MB. What I heard, is that Powercolor simply took the traditional radeon 9600, and upped the gpu clock from 325mhz to 400mhz and sold them as Pro keeping the standard memory clock (due to using cheap memory). I didn't pay much for it (in my country it cost the equivalent of 26 dollars)

What do you think? Did I get a good deal? Is it good enough for GTA San Andreas, Far Cry and NFS u2?

Edit: Point of View = Powercolor

Hey

Point of view never produced ATI cards only nvidia as i remember correct . As for your card bga chips wasnt common at 9600 series and only installed in 128mb version. All 256mb variants has TSOP memory modules which operating on slower clocks. Your card seems like oem version .

DOS: 166mmx/16mb/Y719/S3virge
DOS/95: PII333/128mb/AWE64/TNT2M64
Win98: P3_900/256mb/SB live/3dfx V3
Win Me: Athlon 1700+/512mb/Audigy2/Geforce 3Ti200
Win XP: E8600/4096mb/SB X-fi/HD6850

Thanks for answering. I think I was wrong as for the manufacturer, its a Powercolor, not Point of View. Can you tell me how much slower it is compared to the 128mb version?

It should be same clocks but who knows what makers did , they could put slower memory instead recommended 600mhz . You have to figured yourself just run Gpu Z or any similar programm so you could see what specifications actually your card have.

I could be wrong, but didn't TSOP memory top out at around 400MHz (DDR)?
So my guess is that the core is running at full 9600 Pro clocks, but with 400MHz memory instead of 600MHz.
Edit: Oh man, you said so right in your first post. I should just...stop posting for a while. 🤣

GTA:SA and NFSU2 should be OK, but Far Cry might be pushing it. I remember my P4 3.4/FX5700 Go laptop kinda hating that game back in the day.

It's not very clear on photo, depending on what memory chips are on the card - they are TSOP and they can be both 3.3 ns (then the measure is 300/600DDR) and 5 ns and that is 200/400DDR. Larger memory tended to have looser timings than smaller versions.

Memories seem to be 4ns. But I found it VERY weird, the chipset being "Mobility Radeon 9700", what the heck does that mean? Its one of those Chinese cards?
