I listed some seriously pimped RAM at a seriously underpriced starting point and have had nothing but vultures swoop in on that trying to secure a bargain so they can resell and make a quid!

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/175398771537

This was RAM from a friends PC, that he built eons ago with me, when he was playing Soldier of Fortune with his GTS Pro. We'e come a long way since then, but he STILL sucks at playing FPS games. Some things never change! Hashtag WOODY-YOU-SUCK! 😁

A bit of 8-bit stuff. Wasn't done all today but I ended the project just now.

My pimped C64C with LumaFix, C64 Video Enhancer and an Arduino for switchless reset mod using the RESTORE key.
But then I didn't liked the empty holes where the RF used to be so I ended up wiring a button for cold reseting the C64. I also had that awesome toggle switch with cover laying around so I added it as safety measure for avoid accidental reset.

A Pi1541 and a generic WiFi/serial modem in the userport complete the picture.

Still some jailbars, probably I have to tweak the LumaFix a bit but it's already a big improvement compared to original video quality.

Some people (read: Me) bid low initially then snipe in the last seconds. Not bidding on this though, trying to clear and cancel my most expensive credit card (60 bloody %! Needed it to rebuild my credit rating, but don't need it that much now). I'm in self imposed exile from eBay for a while 😁

See my graphics card database at www.gpuzoo.com
Constantly being worked on. Feel free to message me with any corrections or details of cards you would like me to research and add.

Yeah, some prices are really crazy. Like it's not a precious thing, it's just piece of junk you don't need anyway and can't use anyway. I just want to play with it a little to have my nostalgic feelings. It's old, fragile, often working badly and requires lot of attention, restoration, some additional stuff.

I see somebody selling Pentium 60 or 66 desktop for something like $7000. I suppose, that's that one, with an FDIV bug. Only CPU has some value. Everything else is in unknown condition, not tested, no guarantee. Man, you won't find a buyer on such demands.

You can't argue with Adam Smith's invisible hand. If there is at least one crazy man who is ready to pay those $7000, then that is the market price of this piece of junk.

Well is free market, everyone does something, i never use ebay as my source of getting stuff.. Local AD sites are better for me, also when i find some expensive rare such as GEforce 6800 Ultra AGP, Voodoo V AGP, NV1, IBM Model M and others it is even more rewarding for me, and the feel is even better, then going like jackass and dumping ALOT of money for the stuff i need, is not hard, also i miss the joy from the hunt, as on local AD sites, when i discover something valuable for 5-10 euros, and the seller does not have a clue, what he is selling, the joy is in times more, that hunt is also, a race between other collectors, as ofc they are trying to get cheap stuff as well, some to sell them on ebay, others to add them to their collection.. So for me local hunt >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ebay....

Surely there is not 😀 It's a type of arrogant dumb (usually pretty old) people thinking they won a lottery.

Well, it's hard to call old man dumb if he has enough money to be able to afford himself throughing away $7000 on some piece of junk.

I think someone that have tons of money, will like to be smart and find another way/ place where to buy whatever he want, instead of dumping tons of money on ebay, on some scalper... One thing i can see myself even doing is a "trade", so i can buy something that cost ALOT from ebay, like GUS card, Quantum 3D card, GEforce 5800U and others. I will just buy some of these very expensive, and then i will sell expensive some of my own stuff ( i have bunch of brand new cards such as NV1 and KYRO II Hercules), and by doing that i will nagte the effect of paying anything... As i got the parts for cheap..

I mean the one who finds an old PC somewhere and thinks he can sell it for such a huge price even without checking just because he heard something about strange geeks paying the fortune for old junk.

I've seen single floppies (untested for sure) for $10, CPUs for $100 and so on.

There are collectioners or old junkers that raise prices but at least they understand what they are selling and why it costs so much.

Oh, I don't even mention gold-hunters that destroyed buckets of chips 🙁

Well i dont know what is worse, the ebay scalpers, or the idiot srappers with the hammers... Prob the idiot gold hunters, since they destroy stuff that work too, and melting an 3Dfx card, or some other rare and exotic piece of HW history, should be punished by law (ofc i am not talking about working scrap, i am talking only for 3Dfx class of parts, like high end mobos, specials, exotics ect..)

Nexxen wrote on 2022-08-30, 12:35:

I agree.
I've seen auctions on ebay with the usual untested starting at 95% the price for a full working machine. Sometimes people don't understand the world collectors live in.
Same for coins and banknotes, books....

I hate when scumbags sell UNtested stuff, for ALOT of money, it pisses me even more, that there are idiots that are willing to pay for this kind of BS.. It happens even here locally, sure spending 50 euros for UNtested part is not too much money, but still some times when i try to negotiate normal price with the seller, and explain to him that, when something is UNtested the price, he is looking for is the price of scrap, so one card will cost as much as 5-7 euros, not with a fucking zero behind these numbers.. But since some fuckers are in a hurry they do message the seller with offer, or directly buying the stuff, no matter it may be dead... When this happens i hope the thing to be broken, or very dead, so the rush buyier to suck it, as he deserves that.

Well any hobby is the same, no matter if is retro computer HW, consoles, books, coins, swiss/ japan watches, cars or whatever... Many just try their luck, to cash in on some stuff that may be rare and good, but in poor condition, and that is arrogant, nasty and they deserve 15% of the total price, since they did NOT take their time to recover the damn thing, and make it alot better...

And in general, I don't think it is wise to think that those who rise the prices are dumber than you.

I still see the difference between: "I want $100 for this rare processor because I see demand" and "I want $7000 for this junk, because I've heard some stupid idiots call it retro".

No one forces you to pay $7000. Also no one forbids you to contact the seller and to explain him that $7000 is not a realistic price and that a fair price is $100. I did it several times. Sometimes it works and sellers lower the price significantly. But if they refuse, it's their right to keep the price high. And your right is not to buy it. And other guy's right is to buy it cause he wants it badly and has enough money. That's how it works.

Yes i do that all the time, some times the seller, will lower the price, other times they will not. When i have pictures of stuff that i got before for very small amounts, or even for free, i use to upload them to show the seller, most of the times this works.. Or if that does not work i just show my whole collection in order to proof, that i am collector, not a scrapper. About "wanted badly, and payed ALOT" i learned that patience is a great virtue, over time i got soooo many great stuff, and i did pay nothing for them, since i sold many others that i did not need, or was lower class parts, or was not in mint condition, so i stopped long time ago to care, and not to rush when buying something. Ofc very rare and expensive stuff like Voodoo V, GUS and special keyboards like NorthGate Omnikey, Model F AT, Zenith and others, are stuff that i may rush a bit on them.. But usually i play it cool, no need to bankrupt, cuz some pleb did find a great piece of HW in some dumpster...

Awe is interesting because of the synth, for OPL3 you can always choose something else.

Added an little upgrade to the 4x4 (dual CPU + dual GPU) IBM system, 20GB HDD to use it for the OSes (primary Win 2K, but i think i will add 98SE as well), since it haes one big 200GB ATA drive, but prefer to be for files and storage, not for OS. Also seems the Voodoo V did fix the nasty BIOS ROM Error that did happen before, when the system was ofline for more then 5-7 days, did post with BIOS rom Error, now with the V5 it just posts fine, no matter if was 5 days offline or 50, not sure what is the deal, since i did change before that many parts, and that BIOS rom Error was just there waiting to mess with me, i did use on that system GEforce 7800GS AGP, Radeon x1950, GEforce 3, and others, and the error was there, PSU change did not help as well... I will replace this mobo anyway, since i dont like to store parts that have wear, tear and other crap on them, even if they work fine. So that will prob fix that BS anyway..

The idea is this to be on different platform, then my other systems, so i did choose Win 2000 Pro, to have support for dual CPU, since 98 wont cover it, so i cant use 98 as primary OS here. After all i will use 98 on the machine with Pentium II 450MHz and Voodoo SLI, that will fot ALOT better then this... Not sure on what to use the Voodoo III, maybe swap on the IBM DeathStar 4x4 system between Voodoo III and VV 🤣 ... But i will add win 98 to that system as well, to have the benefit of powerful Glide in the face of VV ...

Did some restoration work on my canopus spectra 256 ddr , I managed to source a new old stock matsushita UDQFSEH12 series fan to replace the temporary stand in SUNON fan.

Which I got as a replacement for the original matsushita UDQFSEH01 fan that I noticed was dead when I tested the gpu after I received the card in the mail.

I could have reversed the screws to their original position so the bolts would be on top as originally configured but its such a pain to unscrew the bolts without a specifc tool since the gap between the cut in and the bolt is very narrow.

So it think this is as good as it gets.

Tried my reflowing method that fixed the 6800GT on the 9800XT I've had forever. Looks like it worked, the artifacting is gone at BIOs at least. I'm out of thermal paste atm but once I get some more, assuming it works under 3D you guys can expect a write up on what exactly I'm doing as it seems to be working. That's a $250 card back from the grave thanks to my $60 chinese soldering station. I also tried it on the 5900 Ultra but it didn't help any with that card.

I disassembled the Austin M1RC laptop to get to know the hardware and here are the specs:

Pentium 100 2.9V
ES1688F
16MB RAM (proprietary)
1.44MB Mitsumi FDD
2GB SD (SD2IDE) that I recently installed
Li-Ion battery (needs a calibration)
TFT display (either 800x600 or 1024x768)
CL-GD7543 video (between 1-2MB video RAM)
CL-PD6729 PCMCIA
Intel i430MX chipset

The good:
Integrated sound
TFT active
Removable battery and floppy drive
Can have up to 2 batteries installed

The bad:
RTC battery is not replaceable, however, I fixed that by installing a CR1220 battery holder
Display power button isn't working since the button needs to be repaired
The locking clip broke off, which is needed to keep the display closed and I can fix that or find a replacement
The TrackPoint is worn and gooey and I can use the one meant for a ThinkPad with it and see if that works
Some drivers are hard to find (primarily the PCMCIA drivers and I think Windows 95 has them, but I digress)
The HDD caddy is missing, so I'll look to see if someone has a NOS one and the original hard drive so I can archive all of the drivers and OS files

Overall:
It's a cute laptop for DOS gaming and it's not that bad, but for how many minor inconveniences there are, it's a fixer upper, however, it boots from the diskette and I've yet to install the OS on it.

I'll post a vlog about it and make a thread about it here and other sites with some gaming.

I tested Lemmings after it booted to MS-DOS via the floppy boot diskette and the sound works without issues.

I got that same laptop. i just got windows 95 installed on it.

R5 5600X, 32 GB RAM, RTX 3060 TI, Win11
P3 600, 256 MB RAM, nVidia Riva TNT2 M64, SB Vibra 16S, Win98
PMMX 200, 128 MB RAM, S3 Virge DX, Yamaha YMF719, Win95

It looks great 😀 I'm surprised the original fans are still available but it's great that they are, it is one distinctive part of how Canopus cards look.

I decided to make up a full connector for the Sony Vaio Picturebook I got the other day: Re: Bought these (retro) hardware today
The chargers are apparently impossible to find and I saw some posts on reddit asking for a good source of them: https://old.reddit.com/r/vaio/comments/w1lw8r … n_im_australia/

It seems that a 2.54mm pin header fits into the socket actually pretty well, so I made a TPU 3d printed 3-part connector to fit snugly in the connector hole:

Eyyy , nice job on the cable , yeah its one of the annoying parts of retro computing , having to source old obsolete specific parts like voodoo sli ribbons or old video or charging cables or replacement fans.

Spent the day Installing a Pentium II Overdrive into my socket 8 system, damn is this a chonky boi of a CPU, had to then alter the exhaust shroud as it would fit over the fan on the cooler 🤣. Still waiting on the new ECC EDO memory to arrive at which point it'll have 512mb of ram, going to 1 gig was possible but im not 100% sure the CPU can cache that much ram. I'm not familiar with the finer points of socket 8 and which CPUs can cache what, but 512mb is far more memory than this system actually needs.

I had to pretty much strip the system down to install the overdrive which gave me a good opportunity to check out the system board and its got a lot more integration that I realized with a bunch of extra sockets that im not yet sure what they are for but the board does have a GD54M40 Cirrus Logic gpu built into it along with the Adaptec SCSI, I have yet to find the manuals or original discs for this system but I like to tinker so I will eventually figure out what everything does on this board.

I just installed 95 on it (well, I used my main laptop with 86Box and installed 95 on an image file and wrote it to the SD card and copied the installation CD to the SD card so all of the drivers will get installed).

The main battery needs to be replaced since it's not holding a charge.

I got this Hercules Prophet 3 Geforce 3 without a cooler yesterday. Slapped aliexpress heatsink on it and seems to work fine. Unfortunately someone has removed the original cooler with way too much force and damaged the traces.

Any ideas what would be the correct way to "repair" this? It's visual damage at the moment but I'd still like to cover it to not touch them if I find original cooler and have to switch it again. Considering something like nail polish or varnish.
