While rebuilding my Windows98SE gaming rig, I was looking for a slow CPU with a balance of running early speed sensitive DOS and Windows games and running later DOS and Windows games up to 1998 with frames at least around 30. I see there are 2 CPUs that are recommended to properly run DOS and Windows games from the 1990-1998 era without running too slow or fast which are AMD K6-III+ and VIA C3. But which one does better then the other at performance with less chance of the framerate dropping?.

Already got the answer about changing my GPU from TrashPanda ---> A̶l̶s̶o̶ t̶h̶e̶ G̶P̶U̶ I̶ h̶a̶v̶e̶ i̶s̶ a̶ G̶e̶f̶o̶r̶c̶e̶2̶ M̶X̶ 4̶0̶0̶, b̶u̶t̶ I̶'m̶ c̶o̶n̶s̶i̶d̶e̶r̶i̶n̶g̶ d̶o̶w̶n̶g̶r̶a̶d̶i̶n̶g̶ i̶t̶ t̶o̶ e̶i̶t̶h̶e̶r̶ a̶ R̶i̶v̶a̶ 1̶2̶8̶ o̶r̶ a̶ R̶I̶V̶A̶ T̶N̶T̶ f̶o̶r̶ b̶e̶t̶t̶e̶r̶ D̶O̶S̶ c̶o̶m̶p̶a̶t̶a̶i̶b̶i̶l̶i̶t̶y̶.

Bloodem has done some research on this topic: Re: Intel CPU sweet spot for DOS games and pre-1999 Windows games on Socket 370

Also the GPU I have is a Geforce2 MX 400, but I'm considering downgrading it to either a Riva 128 or a RIVA TNT for better DOS compataibility.

Mx400 has the exact same DOS vesa core that the tnt and 128 has. NVidia didn’t change the dos stuff till the 6000 series.

So your DOS compatibility won’t change by going back to older cards, I dare say the MX400 will have vastly superior image quality as well.

If you haven't payed attention of who made that sweet spot post , it was obviously me which was how I found out about VIA C3. But then I discovered the K6-III+ here which also has slowdown features.

What I like to know is which of the 2 does better at slow performance and stability?.

Good it know. 👍🏼

I'll leave a note of that in my post.

This thread is probably as close as you will find to an answer: VIDEO BENCHMARKS (Original title: Settling the VIA C3 performance debate once and for all)

There are exceptions such as going back to say a vesa 2.0 or vesa 1.4 card…but that semantics really but you might do it if you do find a game that has issues with vesa 3.0 cards.

Commander Keen games are picky.

I was able to play Commander Keen 4 on MX 400 and PIII 733MHz without any speed issues.
