Hey all

I've just joined as i've gone a little crazy on the retro front and ordered two machines for some good old nostalgia.

Windows 98 SE machine

Spec:
Pentium 4 2.4Ghz
256MB DDR (soon to be 512MB)
60GB Hard Disk (thinking of a SSD upgrade with IDE adaptor)
SIS chipset

It's not the greatest but it holds a lot of nostalgia for me as my friend always had this type of machine but with a CRT which could run Unreal Tournament and Red Alert 2 flawlessly (unlike my Pentium 1 machine at the time.) It's also a complete machine which is nice and how i like them, just as they were back in the day before i discovered custom PC builds.

I've also ordered a Geforce FX5500 card for this as it was cheap and I'm not going to an all out performance rig just some Windows 98/95 gaming at 1024x768

I ordered the non OEM/value version of the Sound Blaster Live! for DOS compatibility and because, well, it was again very cheap so why not i guess.

Also got this as it has 256MB currently so for £5 why not upgrade capacity and speed.

Lastly some little Creative speakers which match the asthetics of the PC.

I'm aware this isn't really period correct for a windows 98 SE rig, i actually wanted to build a Pentium III / 3DFX / ISA sound blaster build for Windows 98 SE but the prices of this stuff now is just crazy so i decided to go for a much cheaper option.

Question, does anyone have chipset drivers for this machine or any other drivers outside of the Sound Blaster / Geforce for that matter. I'm wondering if it will even have any as it's more of a XP era machine. It's a Packard Bell iMedia 5064

My first PC/DOS build

Spec:

Pentium 100Mhz
16MB EDO RAM
2.1GB Hard Disk
Video card not sure?
Sound card not sure? Sound Blaster?

This one is a little more meaningful for me. This was my first ever PC that i actually owned. I recall good memories on this rig playing Quake and Duke Nukem 3D. Great times.

I also went with my common theme of matching the unit to a correct monitor. I think this is a later model CRT than the actual P5-100 as i recall mine had a 13" rather chunky Gateway 2000 CRT but either way it should look great.

Currently put an offer in on these for the complete set up. So may have these to match as well. Again, i think these are later models than what the P5-100 came with originally but should be fine.

Question for you guys... with regards to the Gateway 2000 what OS would you recommend? MS-DOS / 3.11 or MS DOS / Windows 95? It only has 16MB RAM so I'm thinking more 3.11? But what do you think?

Also, Any idea what video card and sound card these came with? I know these can be changed but I'm just curious if this is standard and if so what I'm working with as I don't know what the original specs were on my original Gateway.

Weird. I didn't know Gateway 2000 cases were even able to yellow. I thought they were painted like the old IBMs.

Oh yes, very yellowed but here in the UK they are so hard to come by i had to grab it.

Pentium == Windows 95. You can always add more memory if needed. But 16MB was usually fine back then.

You will have to open the case to check the sound and video cards. Probably some S3 PCI video card.

Nice machines. For the Gateway I would stick with DOS/Win3.1 unless you can get a hold of more RAM. Windows 95 wants 32 MB or more to really work well. If you can get to the cacheable limit of your motherboard (probably 64 megs) then you're golden.

But honestly I don't think you'll get anything out of Windows 95 on that machine that you won't get out of Windows 98 on your P4.

Probably a good one to stick to DOS gaming and Windows 3.1 productivity on. Get yourself a 3C509 card and have some fun with networking.

As for the sound card it came with, it may not have come with one. That was the era when a lot of people were adding sound cards after the fact since they were usually still not integrated into the motherboard. You should open it up and check. From the outside it doesn't look like a Sound Blaster. Might be a Media Vision.

I'm struggling to find what motherboard/chip set this PC has? any part numbers or photo of the motherboard to narrow things down?
