ok I have duke3d working in dosbox on two pcs.
one pc is running xp
one pc is running vista
both on the same network at my house.
how do I get them to play a network game so that I can play my nephew
Please keep it very simple I have been using dosbox for about 15minutes

ok I have tried my best several hours and it still doesn't want to work
I have duke3d working on both pcs 1 has xp on it and the other has vista
I have ipx start
I have ipxnet startserver 213 on the pc with xp on it
VISTA PC
I have ipx start
ipx connect 213
On the router which both pc's are connected to I have port forwarded 213 to the xp pc.
and it won't connect
Please note that on the vista pc I don't have ipx running I don't seem to be able to find it. Does IPX need to be running on both pc's?
the firewall is OFF on both PC's does it need to be?

Try the loading 2 dosbox sessions on thew same computer and connecting one dosbox to the other.
DosBox IPX is emulated. It goes IPX->UDP. So your host does not see IPX at all.

??? i presume you mean a router with several LAN ports. If both computers are connected to the LAN ports, you don't have to forward a port. Port forwarding is for forwarding incoming "outside" connections (the internet) to specific computers on the "inside" network (LAN). You should delete that forwarding, as it doesn't solve your problem, and is a potential security threat. Yes, the XP/Vista firewall has to be disabled (or port 213 has to be opened), on bothe machines. Can you ping the machines from each other? Can both machines see each other in the network (Network Neighborhood)? Maybe your router has a firewall which is set to block ports on the "inside" network (LAN). If it has, then you should disable the firewall/open the ports you need.
I have no experience with Vista, and didn't try DOSBox networking yet, but i'd say your network is not configured correctly. You should first try to get both computers to connect to each other on a low level, and then try DOSBox networking.
If the server is behind a router you do have to forward UDP 213.
