Hi all and hello to the community here!

I was recently trying to get XCOM - Ufo Defense (Not sure if it is the correct english title - I know it as UFO - Enemy Unknown) to work. I'm using DosBox 0.70 and I have quite some troubles.

I use UFO including the 1.2 patch. I also tried 1.4 but I cannot get the sounds to work but the game itself would word then - but I'm really interested in version 1.2. First of all, I succeed in running sounds and starting the game - the intro starts, I can choose the language, the copy protection code is asked - I type it and press enter and then - the screen freezes and the second DosBox-Windows keeps telling me (look attachment) "Illegal read from ..." and scrolls down with numerous illegal reads.

I tried changing IRQ, DMA settings for the sound card but it did not help. I'm able to run Versions 1.0 and 1.4 without sounds but the error message only occurs with version 1.2 (where the sound works). I hope someone can help me because I really want to play the game in version 1.2 (1.0 has a nasty action point bug and 1.4 has worse sound files).

Thanks in advance everyone!

Does core=normal work?

Unfortunately not - the problem remains even with core=normal.

Try replacing the dos4gw with a newer version, or use dos32a.
Then gus should work (there's a known bug in the version of dos4gw
delivered in some (all?) ufo versions).

Thank you for your help. Unfortunately this did not work too. I did the following.

First try: Replaced DOS4GW.exe with DOS4GW.exe V1.97
Second try: Replaced DOS4GW.exe with DOS4GW.exe from UFO 1.0 (as this works but without the sound)
Third try: Replaced DOS4GW.exe with a renamed dos32a.exe
Fourth try: Used the renamed dos32a.exe and core=normal

With every try, the problem did not change - After entering the key code, the game freezes with the mentioned error messages running through the second window.

Can it be that DosBox is not compatible with Version 1.2 of UFO? Should I try to get the sound working on Version 1.4 instead of bothering around with Version 1.2, but on the other hand, it's Version 1.2 I would prefer to play. Is there anyone out there running V1.2 on DosBox successfully? Or is there anything else I could do?

Again thank you, your help is very appreciated!

I've never had any problems with any ufo version under dosbox.
Maybe reinstall it, or try an older dosbox version.

I did have problems with UFO Enemy Unknown before, it may have been this problem. I remember giving up and using the Windows version that came with my XCom Collection instead. Thing is, I have the original Dos version, downloaded several versions, and they all had problems with sound as I seem to recall despite the game database saying they should work fine. I should try them both again. (Ufo EU and Xcom TFTD).

I got version 1.4 of UFO: Enemy Unknown which I bought many years ago. Works perfectly in DOSBox for me. I never tried any other version since 1.4 is the only one on the CD.

I think the version I have and the one floating around the net is an older version - I'll have to try the patch. Or it's possible that the sound problem was fixed before in Dosbox because I haven't tried it since 0.63.

Hi all,

I tried DosBox 0.65 now, did not work either - I think that I will try to get the sound working with XCOM 1.4 - this seems more promising than getting V1.2 to work - furthermore I could try it on another system.

Nevertheless, thank you everyone and if someone has another idea it will be appreciated as well.
