Tried to load Space Quest 3 and got this message. Hunted through these forums and read the readme file but didn't find anything.

Maybe try FreeSCI, it support this game and shouldn't result such a msg:
http://freesci.linuxgames.com/?page=games
(Pre-compiled binaries for different systems)

😉

I think I knew such msgs from Sierra games in earlier times.

There is no specified video in the RESOURCE.CFG. Just run INSALL.EXE to select the drivers to be used. Easier for a newbie to do than to get Free SCI to work. Besides, SQ3 is VGA and gluten is not to be found pre compiled for Windows. Free SCI is a near dead project.

Thanks for the help. I had run the install, but it doesn't say anything about video.

I downloaded freeSCI and it worked! Thanks for that link - I can play now. 😁 It would be nice to get it to work in DOSBox, though, if anyone has any ideas.

Well, I'm still having trouble.

I had used DOSBox to run another Sierra game a year or two ago, so I got drivers from that directory and put them in the SQ3 directory, then edited the resource.cfg file to point to them. Now I don't get errors, but the DOSBox window shows just a floppy icon. If I click in that window, my mouse curser becomes the floppy icon and I can't get out of that window - I have to bring up the program manager and kill DOSBox there.

Any ideas?

I had done that before, but I tried it again, now that I have fiddled with the resource.cfg file. Unfortunately nothing changed - still get the floppy icon and still get stuck in the DOSBox window.

I appreciate all your help. Thanks. Anything else you can think of would also be appreciated. 😀

Okay, I went and bought the Compilation CD, rather than trying to get my old files to work (since it also had a few of the SQ games I hadn't played way back when). It's advertised as running on XP.

So, I load it up and ..... it uses DOSBox to run! 😁

Pretty funny, but happily, it works! I suspect if I had just gotten the right drivers, I could have made my old files work - I think you had gotten me most of the way there, collector. Thanks for all your help.
