Currently most of my retro collection is in a storage unit in another part of the country, but here's something I put together recently

Pentium III 800Mhz (133Mhz FSB version)
256MB SDRAM
8GB CF Card

40X CD-ROM

Had a Voodoo2 12MB installed but removed it for another build, hence the background

Philips 170B LCD
"Technica" two way speaker systems with Class D amplifier (the perspex thing)

Got plans to add a Voodoo3 3000 to this but this is a start!

Thank you. The huge majority of retro builders, don´t bother to cable manage. I would love to see more people trying the best they can in that regard.

So, my concern is in regards to flat cables, like IDE cables. When you bend them really tight, like you seem to be doing, doesn't that potentially damage the cable? That is, I assume that as long as it stays put no harm will come, but if you need to use it on another system and do more tight bends won't the stress cause the wires to break?

Its Aopen/Acer AP43 , it accepts 1MB cache

You can do a fair number of IDE cable bending in the same place with no problem. The cables don´t brake easily.

You can see almost all of my "retro" systems at "Daves Old Computers".
Lots of pics and description. In the process of downsizing and moving to
a more suitable location, I've passed most of these on to new homes...

But here are couple which are NOT on the site:

As part of above mentioned downsizing, I passed on my original "ImageDisk"
system... but enough people have wanted me to continue supporting IMD, that
I threw together this little replacement. Things to note:

- I still had a second AOPEN mainboard with the same "really good" floppy controller.
- I didn't have any spare "old style" cases, and I wanted it to take up as little space as possible.
- Note floppy cable, the "twist" is around the middle set of connectors..
This lets me put any drive B: at the much more accessible end of the cable.

On the 31st of December 1994 I unboxed my first PC. It was a Compaq Presario CDS 510 with the CPU upgraded to a DX2 66MHz.

Today, exactly 28 years later, I finally finished cleaning and restoring to factory settings this Presario CDS 524. Not exactly the same, but close enough. It's practically original except I replaced the original 420MB HDD with a 2GB Compact Flash and added a 3Com ethernet card.

Specs:

• 8MB RAM
• Cirrus Logic CL-GD5424 with 512KB
• 2GB Compact Flash
• 4X CD-ROM
• ESS AudioDrive ES688
• Built-in stereo speakers

From left to right:
1. Deck mid tower - Pentium 166 MMX, 48mb ram, mb LuckyStar 5v1a, video ali m3147, sound yamaha YMF719E-S, 80gb sata hdd reduced to 8gb due to old bios (sata-to-ide adapter), win95
2. IBM PC 330 - Pentium 166, 64mb ram, video integrated S3 Trio864, sound Crystal CX4235, 80gb sata hdd (sata-to-ide adapter), win98se
3. Fujitsu ICL EgoPro x450 - Pentium 90, 32mb ram, video integrated Ati M64, sound ESS audiodrive es688F, 1 gb cf - it worked, but now it just beeps with no video output.
4. Fujitsu Siemens D1561-C23 GS 3 - Pentium 4 3,2ghz, 512mb ram, video Geforce FX5200, sound C-Media CMI 87386 chb 5.1ch-1014, 160 sata hdd, win98se (full drivers for win98se still available on fujitsu site - kudos)
5. HP T5720 thinclient - AMD Geode NX 1500 CPU=1GHz, 512mb ram, Video SiS741 GX Integrated, sound SiS 7012 integrated, 4gb dom, win98se (thanks PhilsComputerlab for all drivers)
6. Fujitsu FUTRO B210 thinclient- VIA C3 samuel 2 533mhz, 64mb ram, video S3 ProSavage integrated, sound VIA VT8231 integrated (thanks Jazefox for VIASBCFG), 2gb dom, ms-dos 6.22
7. HP T5530 thinclient - VIA Eden 800mhz, 128mb ram, video VIA S3G Unichrome Pro IGP integrated, sound - VIA VT8237 AC'97 (Vinyl_V700b drivers), 4gb dom, win98se
The Display is a Dell Panel Monitor 1707 FPt, 4:3 aspect ratio, 1280x1024 max resolution.
Last year I got inspired into retro pc/gaming when I saw philscomputerlab retrofitting those HP thinclients into dos/win98se pcs. I have those thinclients since 2010, used them as file servers, print servers, internet radio player etc.
I dug up from storage that Deck mid-tower (used as router back in the day when internet speed was 256kbs) and Fujitsu ICL ErgoPro (used as mp3 player back in the day).
I got for free from a friend the Dell Display with the Fujitsu Siemens P4.
The only one I bought was the IBM pc 330 because I really like this sliding case and it was a too good price to miss.
Some need front cleaning but it is a hobby and my free time is soo limited. I am kinda sad that I broke that Fujitsu ICL ErgoPro (installed the wrong way a CF to IDE adapter), but still have some hope for repair since is not completly dead, it makes some long and strange beeps, like is trying to sing.

Exactly my story.. first computer, 1994. Version CDS 520 the one with an AMD SX2 66mhz.

Now it features an evergreen 5x86 133mhz, 64 ram, CF card, AWE 64 gold.

Hey, does sound work correctly on that in dos games? There seems to be a drver for the SIS 7012 for win98se. I suppose you haven't tried any PCI video card in it? Am also thinking about getting one if it's worth while.

It is a very nice thinclient. Sound works correctly for duke3d, doom, prehistorik 2 and others.
I didnt tried many games (dos or windows) because I thinker a lot on those pentium I systems with different configs - storage/ OS...
I haven't tried any pci video or sound cards in it, because I need to get an extension pci cable or pci riser and those are getting rare and too expensive these days.
I got all drivers from PhilsComputerlab. There is an article and some videos about this cool machine:

From all new parts I've been collecting, except the hard drive isn't new.

486DX-33, 16MB RAM, GD5428 VLB, OPti sound, 10mbps NIC, Techmedia 3.5, Teac 5.25, CDROM, and "Monster Floppy" controller for the 3rd drive, the Gotek.

MR BIOS so all three floppy drives can be booted from, and natively supported in DOS (my favorite part).

Still want to add a couple of things, and there's always room for more stickers, but here's my Windows 98 SE build so far.

512MB RAM
21" iiyama CRT

Added some modern upgrades such as: Noctua fans, Startech CPU Cooler, 128GB SSD (loaded into a hot swap 3.5" bay) & a Seasonic 550W PSU.

And recently picked up an Artic NV Silencer 3 cooler for the GPU... good bit of kit & a breath of fresh air compared to the noisy stock fan!

Other stuff: Denon PMA-450 amp + Acoustic Research AR18s speakers (games/music etc sound amazing on these 8" beasts!! 😀)
