I've been testing with a number of tools and none of them are displaying the correct temp or even changes in cpu temp even when i stress the CPU. Could it be a bios setting that i'm missing? Hardware is:

Intel Core 2 Duo E7500
Gigabyte GA-G41MT-S2P (rev 1.3)

I've tested with Core Temp, Real Temp and HWiNFO

Well, what are they showing? Is it consistent?

Stuck sensors were a thing, but both cores and main package at once? Not very probable.

Yes, very static. I'm running 7zip bench in the background. The CPU utilization works fine but temps don't change.

Ah! it may be the software versions that i'm using with coretemp, realtemp and hwmonitor. I'll downgrade to XP proper versions and see if that's the issue..

I just checked one of my Core 2 systems and when I 100% load the CPUs the temperatures gradually increase and plummet when the load is removed.

file.php?id=160797

I find it's much easier to see what is happening when you have plots of the % CPU load and temperatures.

Thanks for checking but sadly, mine is stuck. I see my motherboard/chipset temp changing when i stress the cpu but core0 and 1 just sits. I see it changing in the bios and using gigabytes winxp overclocking tool but not core temp, HWiNFO, Realtemp.

There is also OpenHardWareMonitor.
v0.9.2 is the last one to work properly in windows XP.
https://openhardwaremonitor.org/downloads/
On a Core 2 Duo, I found it to work more reliable then CPUID's HWMonitor program.

That's a great tool that i forgot about, thank you. Still a no-go. I even re-installed XP and tested before I installed any of the gigabyte chipset drivers/etc. When i stress the cpu i know the bios is seeing it because the cpu fan will rampup and also the one tool that can read the cpu temp is the gigabyte overclocking tool easytune6.

Q : Are you on latest BIOS for your board ?
If so, try using Xeon/LGA771 moded one (maybe old ucode is messing around with things)

Also, try AIDA64.

Yes sir.. Latest bios.

Not sure i understand about using the moded Xeon/LGA771. Use another bios for a different socket?

Oh, and good call. I'll give AIDA64 a shot.

Using AIDA64 still shows core1 stuck at 44 and Core2 stuck at 36 just like the other tools. But, AIDA64 also shows the overall view of the CPU that DOES change. So, that's some progress 😀

It's about microcode that CPU uses to translate instructions. For Xeons, you simply need one that was moded and you can use it in your board. Moded bios for your board can be found here : LINK

Just to put a cap on this, I ended up finding a Core 2 Duo E7600 for $5 on ebay ($6 shipping 🤣) and it works as you think it might. So, not only do i get to monitor each core but i got a small upgrade to boot.

The selected smd's are part of the temp sensors for core 1 and core 2. Any damage to those sensors or the traces will lead in to 'locked' values/readings. The overall cpu temp (same as the bios) is using another sensor which is less precise but good enough. Also there were some problems with the thermal diodes on early shrieked 65nm to 45nm designs, which e7500 is (45nm).

Great info, thank you! And that's pretty much exactly what was happening. The bios would still ramp up the fans when stressing the cpu but i could not monitor the cores. It's still a great chip that overclocked well.
